Surtr is the fire giant of Norse mythology, an elder power older than the gods themselves. From the burning realm of Muspelheim he waits with a sword that outshines the sun, and when Ragnarök comes it is his flame that swallows the nine worlds and brings the age of the gods to its end.
Who is Surtr?
Surtr (Old Norse Surtr, "the black" or "swarthy one") is a jötunn of primordial fire, named in the Poetic Edda and Snorri's Prose Edda as the guardian of Muspelheim at the southern edge of the cosmos. He stands at its frontier holding a flaming sword, and he has kept that watch since before the world of gods and men was shaped from the body of the giant Ymir. Where most giants belong to frost and stone, Surtr is the embodiment of consuming heat.
The doom he carries
Surtr is less a character of many myths than a fixed point of prophecy: the destroyer who will come. The seeress of the Völuspá foretells that at Ragnarök "Surtr fares from the south with the scourge of branches," his fire blazing ahead of him. He leads the sons of Muspell — the fire-giants — northward to the final battle. As their host rides across the rainbow bridge Bifröst, its span shatters beneath them.
Surtr at Ragnarök
On the great plain of Vígríðr, Surtr meets the Vanir god Freyr. Freyr fights well, but he is doomed, for he long ago gave away his self-wielding sword to win the hand of the giantess Gerðr, and without it he falls before the fire giant. His victory won, Surtr flings fire across all the worlds. The flames climb even to the branches of the world-tree; the stars vanish, the earth burns, and at last the scorched land sinks beneath the sea.
Symbols and legacy
Surtr belongs to the rune Kenaz, the controlled and uncontrolled flame — fire as forge and fire as ruin. Yet his destruction is not the true end. From the drowned world a new and green earth rises, and the surviving gods return to a cleansed creation. Surtr is thus the necessary catastrophe of the Norse cycle: the burning that clears the ground for what comes after, and one of mythology's most striking images of apocalyptic fire.
