Andhrímnir

Andhrímnir is the cook of the gods in Norse mythology, the one who prepares the endless feast eaten by the fallen warriors in Valhalla. Each day he boils the great boar Sæhrímnir in his sooty cauldron Eldhrímnir, and each evening the beast returns whole — a meal that can never run out.

Who is Andhrímnir?

Andhrímnir is the cook of Odin's hall, Valhalla, where the einherjar — the warriors chosen from among the battle-slain — gather to feast and to prepare for the final war at Ragnarök. He is named in the Eddic poem Grímnismál and in Snorri Sturluson's Prose Edda. His name, like those of his cauldron and his boar, contains the element hrím ("soot" or "rime"), marking him as a creature of the cooking-fire and the kitchen.

The endless feast

Andhrímnir's task is to boil the boar Sæhrímnir in the cauldron Eldhrímnir. Sæhrímnir is called the finest of meats, and its flesh feeds the whole host of the einherjar every day. The wonder of the feast is that it never ends: however much is eaten, the boar is made whole and alive again by nightfall, ready to be cooked once more the next day. It is this miracle that makes Valhalla's hospitality inexhaustible — enough to satisfy an army of dead heroes through all the years until Ragnarök.

Symbols and legacy

Andhrímnir belongs to the rune Kenaz, the rune of fire tamed and turned to craft — the hearth-flame that transforms raw meat into a feast. He is a minor but vivid figure, appearing in only a stanza or two, yet he captures something essential about the Norse afterlife: Valhalla is not a place of rest but of abundance, endless food and drink for warriors who fight all day and feast all night. Behind that promise of plenty stands its patient cook, forever boiling the boar that forever returns.
