Lofn

Lofn is the gentle Norse goddess of love, one of the ásynjur named by Snorri Sturluson in his Gylfaginning. Her particular gift is to win union for those forbidden it — the lovers whom law, custom, or prohibition would otherwise keep apart.

Who is Lofn?

Snorri calls Lofn so mild and kindly to invoke that she obtains, from Odin and Frigg, leave for the coming together of men and women — even where marriage has been banned or is not otherwise permitted. She does not overrule the powers of Asgard so much as intercede with them: it is with the highest gods' consent that she opens a way for a bond that seemed closed. Snorri adds a note on her name, linking it to lof, a word meaning both "praise" and "permission," and observing that things granted are "praised" after her.

The attestation is slight — she is known essentially from this single passage and the goddess-lists that echo it. Yet the role is unusually specific and human, set among the affairs of the heart rather than war or fate.

Symbols and legacy

Lofn stands for reconciliation and the sanctioned gift of union — the removing of obstacles between two people who wish to be joined. She sits close in spirit to the rune Gebo, the sign of the gift, of partnership and the bond freely exchanged. Where kindred goddesses such as Freya rule love in its passion and desire, Lofn governs its permission — the quiet grace that lets a forbidden love become a lawful one. She endures as the patron of those whose devotion must first overcome a rule before it can flourish.
