Vé

Vé is one of the three brother-gods who created the world in Norse mythology. With Odin and Vili he slew the primordial giant Ymir, shaped the cosmos from his body, and gave form and spirit to the first human beings.

Who is Vé?

Vé is a primordial god of the Æsir, a son of Borr and the giantess Bestla, and a brother of Odin and Vili. His name means "sacred enclosure" or "shrine," the holy space set apart for worship — fitting for a god present at the very consecration of the world. He belongs to the oldest layer of Norse myth, the generation that turned raw chaos into ordered creation. The rune Ansuz, the rune of the gods and of the divine breath, echoes his part in that first making.

Shaping the world

In the beginning there was only the void Ginnungagap, the frost-giant Ymir, and the emerging gods. Odin, Vili, and Vé slew Ymir, and in the flood of his blood nearly all the frost-giants drowned. From his flesh the three brothers made the earth, from his blood the seas, from his bones the mountains, from his skull the dome of the sky, and from his brains the clouds. Thus the killing of a single giant became the raw material of the whole cosmos, raised and ordered by the three brothers together.

The first humans and Vé's gift

Walking along the seashore, the brothers found two lifeless trunks of wood and made from them the first man and woman, Ask and Embla. Each brother gave a gift: Odin gave breath and life, Vili gave wit and movement, and Vé gave the senses — sight, hearing, and speech, along with a fair outward form. In this way humankind received not only life but the means to perceive and speak of the world. A later tradition even holds that while Odin was long away, Vili and Vé ruled Asgard in his place. Vé stands, above all, as a maker: a quiet architect of both the world and the people who live in it.
