Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown went live on 29 October 2026 at 22:00 UTC, and Kliff can finally leave Pywel's coast behind. Players who solved the base game's Ancient Ruins, striking glowing runestones and reading carved glyphs for clues, are now diving into the expansion's sunken ruins and asking the obvious question.
No. Charting the Unknown adds no runes. The new content is ships, diving, castles, housing and a boss gauntlet, and none of it comes with a runestone, a rune item or a runic script.
That is what makes this expansion worth its own short answer. Most expansions add more of what the base game had. This one went to sea and left the runes on land. The only time the word "rune" appears in its patch notes, it is a dye bug on a shield from the base game.
What is in Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown?
Charting the Unknown is Crimson Desert's first paid expansion, priced at 24.99 US dollars on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. It arrived with the free patch 2.04.00. Pearl Abyss first gave 15 October at PlayStation's State of Play on 3 September, then moved it back two weeks for polish.
Here is what it adds, from the official patch notes:
- The Great Ocean of Pywel. Ships are a new mount type, won through a dispatch mission or bought from fleetmasters in Demeniss and Delesyia.
- Diving. A breath gauge, diving suits, underwater mounts, treasure maps and sunken ruins.
- A richer life on land. Free-construction housing, two castles to liberate (Drakesfall Castle and Flame Knight's Castle), a Restaurant, Sawmill, Smithy and Tailor's shop to run, and marriage at 100 Trust.
- The Garden of Trials. A gauntlet of ten enemy groups near the Axiom Archive Abyss, plus new bosses and new Abyss Gear.
- Three new storylines for Kliff, Oongka and Damiane, teased as an ominous presence in the desert, a political conflict, a journey beyond time and an ancient secret beneath the waves.
Read the list again and look for anything carved. There is none.
Is there a single rune in the expansion?
One word, and it is not new. Before writing this answer we searched every official and launch-week source for rune, runic, glyph, symbol, inscription and script.

The one line reads: "Fixed an issue where the 'Runewalker Shield' was displayed as dyeable equipment." The Runewalker Shield is a base-game item that guides tie to Vordis, the Runewalker boss at Lake Kharonso. The patch fixed it for everyone, with or without the expansion. It does not add a rune, show a rune or explain one. It stops a shield from looking as if you could repaint it.
So the expansion's entire contribution to runes in Crimson Desert is a corrected paint menu.
What writing does the expansion show?
Some, and none of it is runic. Two of the twelve official screenshots carry text, and we zoomed in on both.
In the first, a royal decree is held up in front of a cathedral. It has a crown at the top, a border of leaves and a red seal of a stag's antlers over crossed blades. The lines on it are written in a flowing, joined-up hand: loops, tails and connected letters that spell nothing in any real alphabet.
In the second, seen from above, a workshop table is covered in blueprints for engines and gears. The captions use the same invented hand, and the large title reads like Latin letters flipped in a mirror.
Neither one looks like a rune, and the reason is physical. Runes were made to be cut, into wood, bone and stone, so the futhark is built from straight strokes and avoids curves and horizontal lines that would vanish into the grain of wood. Pywel's new script is made to be written, with a pen on paper, so it curls. The expansion gives its world more writing, and that writing is ink.
Where are the runes in Crimson Desert, then?
All in the base game, released on 19 March 2026, and all on land or in the sky. The main Crimson Desert guide covers them in full. In short:
- Ancient Ruins. Environmental puzzles across Pywel where you strike runestones with light abilities, read glyphs carved on walls and trees, and match symbols cast by statue beams.
- The Abyss. Floating islands whose trials unlock Kliff's elemental powers. Solving a ruin lights an Abyss Cresset and pays an Abyss Artifact.
Those signs are invented puzzle keys, not the Elder Futhark, and you cannot read a word from them. The expansion leaves them exactly as they were.
The open question is the sunken ruins. Pearl Abyss describes them only as places to uncover "underwater treasures, sunken ruins, and hidden mysteries", tied to "an ancient secret beneath the waves". No screenshot, trailer description or guide published by 30 October 2026 shows a carved sign inside one. If they turn out to hold runestones like the land ruins, we will update this answer.
Charting the Unknown runes vs. the Elder Futhark
| Feature | Charting the Unknown (2026) | Elder Futhark |
|---|---|---|
| What one sign is | No new rune signs at all | A letter with a sound, a name and a meaning |
| How many | 0 new runes | 24 |
| New writing | An invented cursive script on paper | Straight strokes cut into wood, bone and stone |
| Can it be read? | No, there is nothing to read | Yes, once you learn the letters |
| In use | Since 29 October 2026 | Roughly 150 to 800 CE |
The real runes, briefly
A rune is first a letter. The Elder Futhark has 24 of them, each a sound, a name and a word: Fehu is cattle and wealth, Ansuz a god, Uruz the wild ox. Germanic peoples carved them from roughly 150 to 800 CE, and Viking-Age carvers later cut the row to the 16-letter Younger Futhark. Because each sign has a sound, a real inscription can be read aloud by anyone who knows the letters.
Beyond writing, the runes carried belief. In Norse tradition, Odin wins them by hanging nine nights on Yggdrasil, pierced by his own spear. From there they served as charms and protections, combined into bindrunes and sigils to hold a focused intent, and read for guidance in a practice that continues today.
Why Pywel's new sea has no room for runes
Pywel was never a Norse world. Pearl Abyss modelled its canyons and coastal cities on the Mediterranean, and the game began as a prequel to Black Desert Online. Its runes were always borrowed shorthand for "ancient power", tied to the Abyss and its lost machinery.
The expansion leans further south and further forward. Its ships are galleons with striped sails, its divers wear brass helmets, and its desert hides war machines that fire lasers. That is a world of print, engines and seafaring trade, and its new paperwork is a decree and a stack of blueprints. Runes would be the odd thing out.
Compare that with Valheim, whose runestones spell English in real futhark letters, or Northgard, which turns runestones into a source of research. Those games are set in the North, so the stones belong there. Pywel's sea does not need them, and Pearl Abyss did not add any.
Want runes you can actually read?
Charting the Unknown gives you a whole ocean and not one rune. The Elder Futhark gives you 24, and every one of them can be read.
The easiest way in is to draw one. You can cast a free rune reading in your browser right now, using the genuine Elder Futhark and their traditional meanings, with a quick single draw for a fast question or a fuller spread for something weightier. If you would rather build the habit slowly, pull a rune of the day each morning and learn the futhark one sign at a time, or read how online rune readings work first. The rest of the series is on the runes in games hub, including the base-game Crimson Desert guide.
Kliff can sail past every island in Pywel's new ocean and never find a letter. The real runes are still on land, and they still say something. , free on iOS, Android, and the web, in English and Russian.
Frequently asked questions
Are the runes in Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown real runes?
There are no runes in it to judge. Nothing Pearl Abyss has published about the expansion, from the store page to the official 2.04.00 patch notes, adds a runestone, a rune item or a runic script. The new content is a sea, ships, diving, castles, housing, businesses and a boss gauntlet. The runes in Crimson Desert all belong to the base game.
Does Charting the Unknown add any rune puzzles?
None that has been documented. The official patch notes, the Steam page, Xbox Wire and launch-week guides list no new puzzles at all, rune-based or otherwise. The base game's Ancient Ruins, with their runestones and glyph clues, are unchanged. The expansion's sunken ruins are the one open question, and no guide had described their insides by 30 October 2026.
What is the Runewalker Shield in the Charting the Unknown patch notes?
A base-game shield, not new content. Patch 2.04.00, released with the expansion, fixed a bug where the Runewalker Shield showed as dyeable equipment. Guides tie the shield to Vordis, the Runewalker boss at Lake Kharonso in the base game. It is the only line in the patch notes containing the word rune, and it is about dye.
What does Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown add?
The Great Ocean of Pywel, which you sail in your own ship, plus diving with a breath gauge, underwater mounts, sunken ruins and treasure maps. On land it adds free-construction housing, two castles to liberate, four kinds of business, marriage at 100 Trust, a Relic Collector NPC and the Garden of Trials, a gauntlet of ten enemy groups near the Axiom Archive Abyss.
When did Charting the Unknown come out, and how much is it?
It launched on 29 October 2026 at 22:00 UTC, 3 pm Pacific, for 24.99 US dollars on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Pearl Abyss had first announced 15 October at PlayStation's State of Play on 3 September, then moved the date back two weeks for polish. It arrived alongside the free base-game patch 2.04.00.
What is the writing on the decree in the Charting the Unknown screenshots?
An invented script. One official screenshot shows a royal decree held up in front of a cathedral, topped with a crown and stamped with a red stag-and-sword seal. Its lines are written in flowing, joined-up letters that belong to no real alphabet. It is not runic: runes are angular and built from straight strokes, while this hand is cursive.
Are there runes in the sunken ruins of Charting the Unknown?
Not that anyone has shown. Pearl Abyss describes the sunken ruins only as places to uncover treasures and hidden mysteries, tied to an ancient secret beneath the waves, and no published screenshot or guide shows a carved sign inside one by 30 October 2026. If they turn out to hold runestones like the base game's Ancient Ruins, this answer will change.
Where are the runes in the base game of Crimson Desert?
In the Ancient Ruins and the Abyss. Ruin puzzles across Pywel use runestones you strike with light abilities, glyphs carved on walls and trees, and symbol-matching beams. Solving one lights an Abyss Cresset and pays out an Abyss Artifact. Those signs are invented puzzle keys, not the Elder Futhark, as the main Crimson Desert guide on this site explains.
Do you have to finish Crimson Desert to play Charting the Unknown?
For the story, yes; for the map, no. GamesRadar reported the new story is effectively an epilogue for Kliff, Oongka and Damiane, so it opens after the main game. Exploring the ocean, diving and the new areas does not wait for the ending. Housing needs the Luke's Request quest and the camp at Howling Hill first.
Is Crimson Desert based on Norse mythology?
No. Crimson Desert is set on Pywel, an invented continent whose canyons and coastal cities Pearl Abyss modelled on the Mediterranean, not Scandinavia. The game began as a prequel to Black Desert Online. Its rune-like signs answer to the Abyss and its lost machinery, and the expansion's new sea adds galleons and diving suits, not longships.
Could runes be added to Crimson Desert later?
Possibly, but nothing has been announced. Pearl Abyss shipped a hotfix the day after launch and has published no roadmap that mentions runes. Pearl Abyss has kept its rune imagery inside the Ancient Ruins and the Abyss since the base game launched on 19 March 2026, and the expansion did not extend it to the sea.
Which runic alphabet would a real carver have used?
For the oldest inscriptions, the 24-letter Elder Futhark, used from roughly 150 to 800 CE. Viking-Age carvers later cut it to the 16-letter Younger Futhark. Each letter has a sound, a name and a meaning, so a real inscription can be read aloud once you know the letters, which is exactly what Pywel's invented signs and scripts cannot do.
Which games do use real runes?
Very few. Valheim writes English in genuine Elder Futhark letters, God of War carves its realms in the same 24-letter row, and Hellblade hides an English sentence in real runes around its Lorestones. Most other games, Crimson Desert included, invent their signs. The runes in games hub on this site sorts each title by what it actually uses.
Where can I try a real rune reading online?
You can cast a free rune reading in your browser with the Way of the Runes rune-reading tool. It uses the genuine 24 Elder Futhark runes and their traditional meanings, with quick single draws for a fast question and fuller spreads for something weightier, and a full description for every rune. It works on any device, in English and Russian.
Which rune are you?
Seven questions, about a minute, and you get one of the 24 Elder Futhark runes. The scoring is shown as you answer. Free, no signup.
