Muspelheim is the blazing primordial world of fire, one of the two realms that existed before Yggdrasil's nine worlds took shape. Ruled by the giant Surt and peopled by his fire-giants, it supplied the heat that helped spark all of creation, and it will supply the flame that ends it.

What it is

In the Prose Edda's account of creation, Snorri Sturluson places Muspelheim to the south, a realm that existed before the earth was made: bright, hot, and blazing, so fierce that no one who does not belong there can endure it. The Poetic Edda names it more darkly, tying Surt's fire to the world's final undoing in the poem Voluspa. Together the two sources agree on one point: Muspelheim's fire is older than the world, and it will outlast it.

Surt, lord of the fire-giants

Surt guards Muspelheim's border with a blazing sword described as brighter than the sun. He is named first among the giants who march on the gods at Ragnarok, and the sources treat him less as a resident of Muspelheim than as its embodiment: where Surt stands, the realm's fire stands with him.

The sons of Muspell

Muspelheim is not empty. Its fire-giants ride as a host, and Voluspa names them as the force that finally breaks the bridge between the worlds.

Fire meets ice: how Muspelheim shaped creation

Muspelheim's role in the myth is not only destructive. Sparks and embers drifting from it across the void of Ginnungagap met the rime spreading out from Niflheim's spring Hvergelmir, and where the heat and cold mixed, the first living shape stirred into being, the giant Ymir. The gods later gathered loose sparks that had escaped Muspelheim and fixed them in the sky as the sun, moon, and stars.

Common questions

The realms, roots, and beings of the Norse world - answered.

What is Muspelheim?

Muspelheim is the primordial world of fire in Norse cosmology, one of two realms that existed before Yggdrasil's nine worlds took shape. It is ruled by the giant Surt and populated by his fire-giants, and the Eddas describe it as so hot that only beings native to it can endure its heat.

Who rules Muspelheim?

Surt rules Muspelheim. He guards its border with a blazing sword and is named first among the giants who march against the gods at Ragnarok, so closely tied to the realm's fire that the sources treat him almost as its embodiment.

What are the sons of Muspell?

The sons of Muspell (Muspells synir) are the fire-giants of Muspelheim who ride out beside Surt at Ragnarok. Voluspa says their weight is enough to break Bifrost, the bridge between Midgard and Asgard, as they cross it.

How did Muspelheim help create the world?

According to the Prose Edda, heat and sparks drifting from Muspelheim met the rime spreading out from Niflheim's spring Hvergelmir across the void of Ginnungagap. Where the two met and melted, the first living shape stirred into being: the giant Ymir.

What happens to Muspelheim at Ragnarok?

At Ragnarok, Surt leads the sons of Muspell out of Muspelheim and across Bifrost, breaking the bridge under their weight. Surt kills the god Freyr in single combat, then flings fire over the nine worlds, burning them before they sink beneath the sea.

Is Muspelheim the same as Hell?

No. Muspelheim is not an afterlife or a place of punishment. It is a primordial realm of fire that predates the nine worlds, closer in Norse cosmology to a source of raw creative and destructive heat than to any Christian concept of Hell, despite the similar sound of the names.
