Risen 3: Titan Lords turned 12 on 12 August 2026, and the Gothic 1 Remake has sent a new wave of players back through Piranha Bytes' catalogue this year. The ones who reach the last Risen land on Calador, join the Demon Hunters, and find a small stone in their inventory called Runeskin. They cast it once, and it is gone.
No. The runes in Risen 3 are eight Demon Hunter spells and a set of one-use stones, not letters. None of them carries a sound, and nothing on them can be read.
What makes Risen 3 worth its own answer is that disappearing stone. In the first Risen a rune was the permanent thing, worth 500 gold, and the scroll was the copy you burned. Five years later Piranha Bytes swapped the two: the spell you learn now stays with you, and the runestone is the copy, worth 50 gold and gone after one cast. Risen 3 made the runestone disposable. The real ones were raised to stand for as long as people live.
What is a rune in Risen 3?
A rune in Risen 3 is a Demon Hunter spell. The Demon Hunters are one of three guilds the game asks you to choose between, an old order of dark knights with a black-and-gold citadel on the rocky coast of Calador. Their leader, the druid Eldric, has lit green beacons to call them back, and in the game's own description the knights "renew their knowledge of rune magic and its spells".
Getting there takes two kinds of payment. First you train the Rune Magic skill with Drake in three levels, costing 500, 1,000 and 2,000 gold, with each level asking for more Magic and Toughness: 25 and 20 for the first, 85 and 60 for the third. Then you buy each spell separately from a teacher in the citadel, and the teachers do not take gold. They take Ancient Knowledge, stone tablets you find while exploring.
The other two guilds get their own schools. The Guardians on Taranis learn crystal magic, and the voodoo pirates learn voodoo with dolls. Rune magic is the Demon Hunters' alone.
Which rune spells are in Risen 3?
Eight, by the fan wiki's list of Risen 3 magic. Each is taught by one of three Demon Hunters, for two to six tablets.
| Rune spell | Teacher | Tablets | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stonefist | Drake | 2 | A melee blow for 60 damage |
| Prowess | Wilson | 3 | Heals you and your group |
| Invigorate | Henrik | 3 | More strength in combat |
| Runeskin | Wilson | 4 | Makes your skin much harder to injure |
| Demon Blade | Henrik | 4 | Grants superhuman reflexes |
| Shockwave | Drake | 5 | 50 damage to every enemy within a radius of 7 |
| Summon Hellhound | Drake | 5 | A hellhound fights beside you |
| Shadow Warrior | Drake | 6 | A shadow warrior fights beside you, after the Ghost Eyes quest |
Add the right-hand column up and the whole school costs 32 tablets. Read down the left-hand column and you get the same answer as in every game of this kind: a list of actions. A punch, a heal, a buff, a summons. Not one of the eight is a sound, and none can be put next to another to make a word.
Why is a runestone single-use in Risen 3?
Because Risen 3 split the rune in two. The spell is what you learn from a teacher, and it is permanent. The runestone is a loose inventory item that casts the same spell once. The Runeskin stone's text reads "This runestone makes your skin impenetrable and much harder to injure", it is worth 50 gold, and the game marks it as consumed on use.
Set that beside the first Risen and the swap is exact.
| Risen (2009) | Risen 3 (2014) | |
|---|---|---|
| The permanent thing | The rune | The learned spell |
| The one-use copy | The scroll | The runestone |
| Value of a rune | 500 gold | 50 gold |
| What unlocks the permanent thing | Seal training and Wisdom | Rune Magic training and tablets |
In 2009 the rune was the master and the scroll the paper copy. In 2014 the knowledge sits in your head and the rune is the cheap copy that breaks when used. It is a tidy design, and it moves the rune to the bottom of the pile, below the spell it carries.
Real runes went the other way. A carved stone was among the most lasting things a Viking-Age family could make, and they said so on the stone. The Sälna stone in Uppland, from about AD 1000, stood where a main road crossed a stream. Three brothers raised it for their father, and its inscription reads: "Ever will (it) lie, while mankind lives on, the firm-founded bridge, broad in memory of the good (one)." Then it boasts: "No pathside-monument will be better." It is still standing near Skånelaholm.
What are the Ancient Knowledge tablets?
They are the closest Risen 3 comes to writing, and the game knows it. The item text says: "The knowledge of the ancestors is recorded on this stone tablet. It looks very old, and holds many secrets just waiting to be deciphered."
Nobody in the game deciphers one. Each tablet is worth 10 gold, the Demon Hunter teachers take them as fees, and smiths use them as a crafting part for the Rune Sword. A stone covered in ancestral knowledge works as coin.
That fits the order's history as the German fan wiki tells it from in-game books. The old Demon Hunters fought the Titans with rune magic as their greatest weapon, from a citadel with no windows and no second entrance. One writer who was shown inside was told he must never speak of it, write it down or even think about it. In Risen 3 the runes are a guild secret, and the knowledge on stone is something you spend.
Real runestones were the opposite of a secret. They stood at assembly places, roads, bridges and fords, where the most people would pass them, and they were usually painted in bright colours when they were raised. The Jarlabanke stones in Täby announce to every traveller that Jarlabanke "made this causeway for his soul's sake". A runestone had value only if someone read it.

The real runes, briefly
The Elder Futhark is 24 letters, used by Germanic peoples from roughly 150 to 800 CE and carved into wood, bone, metal and stone. Each letter is a sound, a name and a meaning: Fehu is cattle and wealth, Ansuz a god, Uruz the wild ox. In the Viking Age, Scandinavia trimmed the row to the 16 letters of the Younger Futhark, the script of the Sälna and Jarlabanke stones. Of roughly 6,000 runic inscriptions in Scandinavia, about 3,000 are runestones, and most were raised between 950 and 1100.
In Norse tradition Odin wins the runes by hanging nine nights on Yggdrasil, pierced by his own spear. From there they served as charms and protections, were combined into bindrunes and sigils to hold a focused intent, and were read for guidance in a practice that continues today. Every one of those uses starts from letters you can sound out.
Why the Southern Seas have no room for real runes
Risen 3 is set in the Southern Seas, a chain of pirate islands from Antigua to Kila and Taranis, in a world the gods have abandoned and the Titans have ravaged. The hero is a pirate captain who has lost his soul to the Shadows. There is no Norse mythology anywhere in it: no Odin, no Yggdrasil, no Eddas, and no Germanic script.
The Demon Hunters are the most northern-looking thing in the game, with their iron, their hammers and their druid, so it fits that the runes belong to them. Piranha Bytes also gave its old players a reply to Gothic 3, where rune magic was declared extinguished: in Risen 3 a whole guild exists to bring a lost rune magic back. That is good storytelling. It is still a spell system, and the stones in it are built to be thrown away.
Want runes you can actually read?
Risen 3 gives you eight runes you learn once and stones you burn once. The Elder Futhark gives you 24 letters that are still there a thousand years later, the way the Sälna stone still stands by its road.
The quickest way in is to draw one. Cast a free rune reading in your browser, using the genuine Elder Futhark and their traditional meanings, or pull a rune of the day each morning and learn the letters one at a time. The brothers at Sälna never saw a Titan, but they knew what a stone was for, and they told every passer-by on it. , free on iOS, Android, and the web, in English and Russian.
Frequently asked questions
Are the runes in Risen 3 real runes?
No. The runes in Risen 3 are eight combat spells of the Demon Hunters, such as Runeskin, Stonefist and Shockwave, plus a matching single-use runestone for each one. None of them stands for a sound, and none can be combined with others into a word. Piranha Bytes used the word rune for a spell and for a disposable item, not for writing.
How many runes are in Risen 3?
Eight rune spells, according to the fan wiki's list of Risen 3 magic: Runeskin, Prowess, Invigorate, Demon Blade, Stonefist, Shockwave, Summon Hellhound and Shadow Warrior. Each one also exists as a runestone item that casts the spell once. That is far fewer than the first Risen, which had 18 runes, and a third of the 24 letters of the Elder Futhark.
How do you learn rune magic in Risen 3?
Join the Demon Hunters on Calador, then train the Rune Magic skill with Drake. It has three levels, costing 500, 1,000 and 2,000 gold, and each level asks for more Magic and Toughness, from 25 Magic and 20 Toughness up to 85 and 60. The spells themselves are bought separately from teachers in the citadel with Ancient Knowledge tablets.
Who teaches rune spells in Risen 3?
Three Demon Hunters in the citadel on Calador. Wilson teaches Runeskin and Prowess. Drake teaches Stonefist, Shockwave, Summon Hellhound and, after the Ghost Eyes quest, Summon Shadow Warrior. Henrik teaches Invigorate and Demon Blade. Each spell costs between two and six Ancient Knowledge tablets, and none of them is available until you have joined the Demon Hunters.
What are Ancient Knowledge tablets in Risen 3?
Stone tablets you find while exploring or earn from quests. The item text says the knowledge of the ancestors is recorded on them and that they hold many secrets just waiting to be deciphered. You never decipher one. Each tablet is worth 10 gold, Demon Hunter teachers take them as payment for spells, and smiths use them for the Rune Sword.
What is the difference between a rune spell and a runestone in Risen 3?
A learned rune spell is permanent: once a teacher has shown it to you, you can cast it again and again. A runestone is an inventory item that casts the same spell once and is then gone. The Runeskin runestone, for example, is worth 50 gold and is used up on casting. It is the job a scroll did in the first Risen.
Did runes work differently in the first Risen?
Yes, they worked the other way round. In Risen, from 2009, a rune was the permanent object: a stone worth 500 gold that a mage with the right Seal could cast as often as mana allowed, while a scroll was the one-use copy. In Risen 3, from 2014, the spell you learn is permanent and the runestone is the one-use copy.
What does Runeskin do in Risen 3?
Runeskin is a protective spell that, in the game's words, makes your skin impenetrable and much harder to injure. Wilson teaches it in the Demon Hunter citadel for four Ancient Knowledge tablets. It also exists as a single-use runestone worth 50 gold, which a fan wiki says Flynn, the storekeeper in Antigua, can be talked into handing over in a small box.
Can you use rune magic without joining the Demon Hunters?
Not the learned spells. The game asks you to ally with one of three guilds, and every Risen 3 skill guide notes that rune spells can only be learned after joining the Demon Hunters. The Guardians learn crystal magic and the voodoo pirates learn voodoo instead. Runestone items are a separate case: they are loot, and you can find or be given one.
What are the three kinds of magic in Risen 3?
Crystal magic, rune magic and voodoo, one for each guild you can join. The Guardians on Taranis use crystal magic, with spells like Hail of Shards and Rain of Fire on scrolls. The Demon Hunters on Calador use rune magic. The voodoo pirates use dolls for spells such as Parrot Flight and Kiss of Death. Each school has its own one-use object.
Is Risen 3 based on Norse mythology?
No. Risen 3 is set in the invented Southern Seas, among pirate islands such as Antigua, Kila and Taranis, after the gods have abandoned the world and Titans have ravaged it. Its Demon Hunters are dark knights with axes and hammers, led by a druid. There are no Norse gods, no Yggdrasil and no Germanic script anywhere in the game.
Is Risen 3 related to Gothic?
Yes, through its makers. Piranha Bytes made Gothic, Gothic 2 and Gothic 3 before the Risen series, and in both series only one group may learn rune magic. The link runs deeper in the plot. Gothic 3 declared rune magic extinguished, and Risen 3 builds a whole guild around bringing a lost rune magic back from an order that had sunk into oblivion.
Where did real runestones stand?
In the open, where people would pass and read them. Runestones were placed at assembly sites, roads, bridges and fords, and most of the roughly 3,000 in Scandinavia were raised between 950 and 1100. The Sälna stone in Uppland, from about AD 1000, stood where a road crossed a stream, and its text calls itself a pathside monument.
