Are the Runes in Risen Real?

No. Risen's 18 runes are mage spells, Tell Joke among them, not letters. Real runes did reach its Mediterranean, cut by Vikings, and still read.

Risen came out on 2 October 2009, the first game Piranha Bytes made after it left JoWooD and the Gothic name behind. The studio closed in 2024, and on 5 June 2026 the Gothic 1 Remake sent its old players back through its catalogue. Follow that trail to the island of Faranga, join the mages at Volcano Keep, and you soon hold a stone with a sign on it and a mana cost under it.

No. The runes in Risen are 18 mage spells, not letters. One of them makes you tell a joke, and none of them spells a word.

Risen is worth its own answer because of where it puts them. Faranga is a Mediterranean island, modelled on Sicily with names from the Norman period, about as far from a Norse setting as this series gets. And real runes did reach that sea, in the same century the Normans took Sicily: on a marble lion in the harbour of Athens, and on four Swedish stones for men who died in southern Italy. Risen brought runes to the Mediterranean as spells. The Vikings brought them as writing, and almost a thousand years later we can still read what they said.

What is a rune in Risen?

A rune in Risen is a reusable spell for mages. You find it or buy it, each one is worth 500 gold, and you cast it by paying mana. To use it you need the Seal skill, four levels taught by Ignatius at Volcano Keep, and each level asks for more Wisdom: 50, 100, 150 and 200.

Risen splits its magic in two. Crystal magic is the combat school: Magic Bullet, Fireball and Frost, each trained up to ten levels. Rune magic covers most of the rest: levitation, telekinesis, healing, buffs and a few transformations. The loading screens spell out who gets what. "Mages can perform all types of magic: scroll, crystal and rune magic," while Warriors of the Order are left with scrolls and crystals. Don Esteban's bandits get no Seal at all.

So what stands between you and a rune is a faction and a stat. Nothing on the stone has to be read.

Which runes are in Risen?

Eighteen, sorted by the Seal level that unlocks them. The fan wiki lists a mana cost and a scroll ingredient for each, and the ingredients matter in the next section.

RuneSealManaScroll ingredient
Light Spell110Gold coins (10)
Telekinesis110Wing dust
Tell Joke120Pearl
Create Illusion120Tusk
Nautilus Transformation120Nautilus shell
Small Magic Healing120Healing herb
Destroy Magic Force Field120Mana plant
Levitation220Wings (2)
Medium Magic Healing230Healing plant
Berserker240Teeth (10)

Open Locks330Lock picks (2)
Speed340Wanderlust
Conjure Skeleton340Bones (2)
Strong Magic Healing340Healing root
Ashbeast Transformation460Ashbeast heart
Inferno480Tusks (2)

Read down the names and the list tells you what it is. Create Illusion "summons a gorgeous lady guaranteed to attract attention". Tell Joke exists because "a good laugh can make many a shameful deed be forgotten". Open Locks asks why you would "waste time with lock picks". Each rune is a verb, a thing a mage does. An alphabet has no verbs in it, only the sounds that verbs are built from.

Can you copy a rune onto a scroll in Risen?

Yes. Learn Create scrolls from Illumar at Volcano Keep for 5 learning points, then take a rune you own, a Blank Scroll and the ingredient from the table to a writing desk. You get a one-use copy of the spell. Anyone can use a scroll, but only a mage with the right Seal can cast the rune itself.

This is the closest Risen comes to writing, so it deserves a second look. The rune is the master, the scroll is a copy on paper, and the copy is cheaper to run: Levitation from a scroll costs no mana at all, Levitation from the rune costs 20.

Real runes made the same jump from stone to page, and the result shows what Risen's copy leaves out. The Codex Runicus, written around 1300, is 202 pages of parchment in runes, holding the Scanian Law of the Danish province of Scania, now southern Sweden. Each rune in it stands for a letter of the Latin alphabet, so the book reads line by line and word by word, like any other law book.

When a Scanian scribe copied runes onto parchment, the copy carried language. When a Risen mage copies a rune onto a scroll, the copy carries an effect, and the scroll is no more readable than the stone.

Did real runes ever reach the Mediterranean?

Yes, in the 11th century, carried by Scandinavians serving the Byzantine emperor. The clearest case is the Piraeus Lion, a white marble lion about 3 metres high, sculpted around 360 BC for the harbour of Athens. In the second half of the 11th century someone cut two long runic inscriptions into its shoulders and flanks, laid out as a dragon-headed band like a Swedish runestone.

The lion did not stay in Greece. The Venetian commander Francesco Morosini took it in 1687, and it now stands at the Venetian Arsenal. The runes are badly weathered and parts have to be reconstructed, but enough survives that scholars have argued over the reading since 1854. Erik Brate's 1914 version, the most widely accepted, names Swedes and a fallen warrior called Horsi.

The second case sits closer to Faranga's model. Four runestones in Uppland and Södermanland remember men who died in Langbarðaland, the land of the Lombards, which means southern Italy. They were probably members of the Varangian Guard, killed fighting the Lombard principalities or the invading Normans. Guðlaug raised two stones for her son Holmi: "He died in Lombardy." Inga raised one for Óleifr, who "ploughed his stern to the east, and met his end in the land of the Lombards."

Those are the same decades in which the Normans took Sicily, from the first landing in May 1061 to the fall of Noto in February 1091. The real Mediterranean of Risen's model has real runes. They are just not spells. They are names scratched on a lion and grief cut in stone back home, and every word of them was meant to be read.

The real runes, briefly

The Elder Futhark is 24 letters, used by Germanic peoples from roughly 150 to 800 CE and carved into wood, bone, metal and stone. Each letter is a sound, a name and a meaning: Fehu is cattle and wealth, Ansuz a god, Uruz the wild ox. In the Viking Age, Scandinavia trimmed the row to the 16 letters of the Younger Futhark, the script of the Italy runestones.

In Norse tradition Odin wins the runes by hanging nine nights on Yggdrasil, pierced by his own spear. From there they served as charms and protections, were combined into bindrunes and sigils to hold a focused intent, and were read for guidance in a practice that continues today. Every one of those uses starts from letters you can sound out.

Why Faranga has no room for real runes

Faranga is ruled by the High Inquisitor Mendoza, its mages draw their power from a Fire Titan, and its look is Sicily, with buildings and names from the Spanish Inquisition and the Norman period. A preview from the time put it plainly: the locales "look more like Greece than the forested regions in the middle of Europe."

A Germanic alphabet would be the odd thing out in that world, and Piranha Bytes made the sensible call. It kept the rune from Gothic, where mages also carry runes and climb six Circles of Magic, swapped the Circles for four Seals and moved the whole system south. The result is a tidy magic system and an honest fantasy. It has nothing to do with the Scandinavians who carried runes into the Mediterranean and wrote their names instead of casting them.

Want runes you can actually read?

Risen gives you 18 runes that do something the moment you pay the mana. The Elder Futhark gives you 24 that say something, the way Guðlaug's stone still says where Holmi died.

The quickest way in is to draw one. Cast a free rune reading in your browser, using the genuine Elder Futhark and their traditional meanings, or pull a rune of the day each morning and learn the letters one at a time. To see how it works first, read how online rune readings work. The rest of the series is on the runes in games hub, including the studio's earlier games: Gothic, Gothic 2 and Gothic 3, which dropped rune magic altogether.

The Varangians who died in Langbarðaland never met a Fire Titan, but their names are still readable on Swedish stones almost a thousand years later. , free on iOS, Android, and the web, in English and Russian.

Frequently asked questions

Are the runes in Risen real runes?

No. The 18 runes in Risen are reusable mage spells, not letters of an alphabet. Each one is a stone that casts a single effect, such as Levitation, Telekinesis or Inferno, once you pay its mana cost. None of them carries a sound, and none can be combined with others into a word. Piranha Bytes used the word rune for a spell item, not for writing.

How many runes are in Risen?

Eighteen, split across four Seal levels. Seal 1 unlocks seven, including Light Spell, Telekinesis and Tell Joke. Seal 2 unlocks five, among them Levitation and Berserker. Seal 3 unlocks four: Open Locks, Speed, Conjure Skeleton and Strong Magic Healing. Seal 4 unlocks the last two, Ashbeast Transformation and Inferno. Every rune has a value of 500 gold.

How do you use runes in Risen?

You need the Seal skill at the level the rune asks for, and enough mana to cast it. Seal has four levels, and each one needs more Wisdom: 50 for the first, then 100, 150 and finally 200. A rune is not used up when you cast it, so once you own it and qualify for it, you can cast it as often as your mana allows.

Who teaches the Seal skill in Risen?

Ignatius, a mage at Volcano Keep, the monastery where the Order of mages lives. He teaches Seal only to members of the mages, and the fan wiki disagrees on whether he starts in chapter 2 or chapter 3. Illumar, also at Volcano Keep, teaches the related Create scrolls skill and sells runes, as does the merchant Cyrus.

Can warriors or bandits use runes in Risen?

Not according to the game's own loading screens. They say that mages can perform scroll, crystal and rune magic, while Warriors of the Order can use scrolls and magic crystals. Don Esteban's bandits get no Seal training at all. Anyone can still use a spell scroll, so a non-mage can cast a copy of a rune spell, one use at a time.

What is the difference between runes, scrolls and crystal magic in Risen?

A rune is a reusable spell that only a mage with the right Seal can cast. A scroll casts the same spell once, anyone can use it, and it often costs less mana: Levitation from a scroll costs nothing, from the rune 20. Crystal magic is the separate combat school of Magic Bullet, Fireball and Frost, each trained up to ten levels.

How do you make scrolls from runes in Risen?

Learn Create scrolls from Illumar at Volcano Keep for 5 learning points. Then take a rune you own, a Blank Scroll and the rune's ingredient to a writing desk. Each rune has its own ingredient: ten gold coins for Light Spell, a pearl for Tell Joke, two bones for Conjure Skeleton, an Ashbeast heart for Ashbeast Transformation.

What does the Tell Joke rune do in Risen?

It makes your character tell a joke. The in-game description reads: a good laugh can make many a shameful deed be forgotten. It is a Seal 1 rune, costs 20 mana, and its scroll needs a pearl. Together with Create Illusion, which summons a lady to draw attention, it shows that Risen's runes are actions a mage performs, not signs anyone reads.

What is the strongest rune in Risen?

Inferno, one of the two Seal 4 runes, which rains fire and brimstone on your opponents. At 80 mana it is also the most expensive rune to cast in the game. The other Seal 4 rune, Ashbeast Transformation, costs 60 mana and turns you into a fearsome monster. Reaching Seal 4 needs 200 Wisdom and membership of the mages.

Is Risen based on Norse mythology?

No. Risen is set on Faranga, an invented Mediterranean island whose look is modelled on Sicily, with buildings and names drawn from the Spanish Inquisition and the Norman period. It has Titans, a High Inquisitor called Mendoza and an order of fire mages. There are no Norse gods, no Yggdrasil and no Eddas in it, and no Germanic writing either.

Is Risen related to Gothic?

Yes, through its makers. Piranha Bytes built Gothic, announced it was leaving its publisher JoWooD in May 2007, and made Risen with Deep Silver instead, without the Gothic name. The magic shows the family tie: Gothic's mages climb six Circles of Magic and carry runes, and Risen's mages climb four Seals and carry runes. Neither game's runes are writing.

Did Vikings carve runes in the Mediterranean?

Yes. The clearest case is the Piraeus Lion, a marble lion sculpted around 360 BC for the harbour of Athens. In the second half of the 11th century, Scandinavians cut two long runic inscriptions into its shoulders and flanks. The Venetian commander Francesco Morosini took it in 1687, and it still stands at the Venetian Arsenal, weathered but partly readable.

What are the Italy runestones?

Four 11th-century runestones in Uppland and Södermanland, Sweden, that remember men who died in Langbarðaland, the land of the Lombards, meaning southern Italy. They were probably Varangian Guards killed fighting Lombards or Normans. Guðlaug raised two for her son Holmi, and Inga raised one for Óleifr. They are written in the Younger Futhark and can still be read.
