Gothic II shipped in Germany on 29 November 2002, and on 29 September 2026 it returns on PlayStation and Xbox as Gothic II Complete Classic, with the Night of the Raven add-on attached. A new set of players is about to open the inventory, find a heavy stone plate with a symbol cut into it, and ask the obvious question.
No. The runes in Gothic 2 are invented spell-signs, not writing. None of the 57 spells anything, in any language, and there is no cipher underneath them.
What makes Gothic 2 worth a separate answer from the first game is that it hands you the toolkit. You craft your own runes here, one at a time, from a recipe. And once you have read the recipe, the argument is over: you cannot forge a letter out of sulphur.
What a rune is in Gothic 2
A rune is a permanent spell. Slot it, pay the mana, cast it as often as you like. A scroll casts the same spell once and is gone. Runes usually cost more mana per cast, and that trade is the whole shape of a mage build in this game: you burn scrolls early and you carry runes late.
Making one is not a single action. It is three purchases stacked on top of each other:
- Complete the Circle of Magic the spell belongs to. There are six, at 5 learning points each in Night of the Raven.
- Buy that specific rune's crafting skill from a trainer. Not rune-making in general. That one rune. Nefarius, Hyglas, Parlan, Karras, Marduk and Vatras each teach a different slice of the list.
- Supply the materials at a rune table: a blank plate of magic ore, plus the reagent the recipe calls for.
There are 39 of those crafting skills, priced from 1 learning point for Light up to 20 for Army of Darkness. Eight more spell runes, including Beliar's Wrath, Drain Life, Root Tendrils and Insect Swarm, cannot be crafted at all. You find those, or someone hands them to you.
Hold on to point two. It is the whole article.
The recipe is the argument
Here is what the rune table actually asks for. Read down the right-hand column.
| Rune | Circle | Reagent |
|---|---|---|
| Light | 1 | A gold coin |
| Fire Arrow | 1 | Sulphur |
| Lightning | 1 | Rock crystal |
| Heal Light Wounds | 1 | Healing plant |
| Ice Arrow | 2 | Glacier quartz |
| Fireball | 2 | Pitch |
| Sleep | 2 | Swampweed |
| Wind Fist | 2 | Coal |
| Whirlwind | 2 | Bloodfly wings |
| Fear | 3 | Black pearl |
| Geyser | 3 | Aquamarine |
| Create Skeleton | 3 | Skeleton bone |
| Destroy Undead | 4 | Holy water |
| Summon Golem | 4 | Stone golem heart |
| Summon Demon | 5 | Demon heart |
| Army of Darkness | 6 | Skeleton bone, stone golem heart, demon heart and black pearl |
Every reagent is the spell. Fire comes from sulphur. Ice comes from quartz taken off a glacier. Healing comes from a healing plant. To raise a skeleton you need a bone from a skeleton; to call a demon you need a demon's heart; and to raise an entire army of the dead you need all four summoning ingredients at once, because the spell is all four spells compounded.
This is sympathetic magic, the oldest recipe logic there is: like produces like, and the part stands for the whole. It is how a real herbalist or alchemist works, and Piranha Bytes built a consistent, satisfying crafting system on it.
It is also not writing, and the reason is exact. In Gothic 2 the meaning of a rune lives in what you put into it. In an alphabet, the meaning of a letter lives in what it sounds like, and it is arbitrary: nothing about the shape of ᚠ resembles cattle, nothing about ᛒ resembles a birch. That arbitrariness is not a flaw in writing. It is the thing that makes writing work, because a sign freed from resembling its object can be reused in any word at all.
Fifty-seven signs, twenty-four letters
Now the count, which is the fastest version of the same point.
- Gothic 2 (Night of the Raven): 57 runes. 47 spell runes plus 10 teleport runes.
- Gothic 1 (2001): 25 runes. The 2026 remake: 26.
- The Elder Futhark: 24 letters, unchanged from roughly 150 to 800 CE.
Gothic's list more than doubled in a single year, and it grew for a simple reason: every new effect needed a new sign. A bigger fireball needed Great Fireball. A colder wave needed Ice Wave. A second kind of summon needed a second summoning mark.
The futhark never had that problem, because its 24 letters do not name things. They combine. Twenty-four signs generate every word that was ever carved on a runestone and every word that ever could be, in any Germanic language, forever. That is what a writing system is: a finite set that generates an infinite one.
A spell list cannot do this, and Gothic 2 proves it by making you pay for each sign separately. Thirty-nine learning-point purchases, one per rune, and at the end of them you know thirty-nine things. Learn the twenty-four Elder Futhark letters and you can read everything.
Summon Wolf is a drawing of a wolf
Look at the plates themselves and the point stops being theoretical.
- Summon Wolf carries a four-legged animal, side-on, head lowered.
- Create Skeleton carries a skull above a curved bone.
- Create Goblin Skeleton carries a small skeleton with its arms raised.
- Summon Golem carries a blocky humanoid figure.
- Whirlwind carries a tornado.
- Ice Lance carries a lance with a snowflake at its base.
- Insect Swarm carries scattered insects.
- Shrink Monster carries an open mouth full of teeth.
These are pictograms: signs that work by resembling what they mean. And the clearest tell of all sits at the top of the sixth circle. Create Skeleton is one skull. Army of Darkness is the same skull drawn three times in a row above a bed of bones.
That is how a picture system makes a plural: it draws more. A writing system makes a plural with a letter, because its signs are not pictures and can carry grammar. Gothic 2 shows you the difference on two stone plates, side by side in the same inventory.
Two kinds of stone
There is a second visual division the first game never had, and it is worth a paragraph because it is genuinely well designed.
Mage runes, the Circle runes, are dark blue-black plates of magic ore with the sign cut in pale grey and lit from inside. The paladin runes are something else entirely: pale sandstone, warmer, rougher, with the mark picked out in white or gold. Banish Evil, Holy Arrow, Holy Light, Minor Wound Healing and Medium Wound Healing all sit on that lighter stone, and so does Teleport to Paladin Armor.
Innos' magic is a different material, not just a different colour. That is a nice piece of world-building, and it tells you the same thing the recipe did: the school is encoded in the object, not in the sign. Note too what sits on the Minor Wound Healing plate, cut in gold: a cross. Not a futhark character. A borrowed real-world religious symbol, doing exactly the job an icon does.
The 2026 remake of Gothic 1 solved the same problem with glow colour instead of stone. Both games sort their signs by school, which is precisely what an alphabet must never do.

The real Gothic runes, briefly
The word "Gothic" hides a genuine twist, and it belongs to the first article in this series rather than this one. The Goths were a real East Germanic people who carved real Elder Futhark, and a few of their inscriptions survive: the Ring of Pietroassa, found in Romania and dated to about AD 400, reads gutani wi hailag, "sacred to the Goths". The Spearhead of Kovel reads tilarids. Then the bishop Wulfila built a Greek-derived alphabet in the mid-4th century to translate the Bible, and runic writing among the Goths effectively stopped.
So real Gothic runes exist, they are dated, and we can read them. The full account is in Are the runes in Gothic 1 real?.
And if you want the one place where the Gothic series does put a readable script on screen, it is not here. It is in the add-on: see Are the runes in Gothic 2: Night of the Raven real? for the Builders of Jharkendar and the three tiers of their dead language.
Why Khorinis has no room for real runes
Gothic 2 leaves the Colony behind for the island of Khorinis, but the world is the same invention: the kingdom of Myrtana, three original gods in Innos, Adanos and Beliar, Fire Mages and Water Mages, and dragons in the Valley of Mines. There is nothing from Norse tradition anywhere in it. No Odin, no Yggdrasil, no Eddas.
Given that, invented signs were the honest choice, and a crafting system built on sympathetic reagents was a better idea than borrowing an alphabet nobody in Myrtana would have any reason to use.
What the game leaves out is everything the real runes carry beyond their shapes. In Norse tradition Odin wins the runes through sacrifice, hanging nine nights on Yggdrasil pierced by his own spear. From there they served as charms and protections, combined into bindrunes and sigils to hold a focused intent, and read for guidance in a practice that continues today.
Want runes you can actually read?
Gothic 2 gives you 57 signs that do things, and charges you 39 separate lessons for the privilege. The Elder Futhark gives you 24 that say things, and you learn them once.
The easiest way in is to draw one. You can cast a free rune reading in your browser right now, using the genuine Elder Futhark and their traditional meanings, with a quick single draw for a fast question or a fuller spread for something weightier. If you would rather build the habit slowly, pull a rune of the day each morning and learn the futhark one sign at a time, or read how online rune readings work first. The rest of the series is collected on the runes in games hub, including Valheim, the one game that uses the real futhark, and The Witcher 3.
Piranha Bytes built one of the best crafting systems of its decade on signs that mean nothing, and that was the right call for Khorinis. The letters that do carry meaning are still out here, and they are older than Myrtana by twelve centuries. , free on iOS, Android, and the web, in English and Russian.
Frequently asked questions
Are the runes in Gothic 2 real runes?
No. The 57 runes in Gothic 2 are invented spell-signs cut into stone plates, not characters in an alphabet. Nothing on them spells anything in any language. Piranha Bytes designed them as pictures of the effects they produce, which is why Summon Wolf carries a drawing of a wolf and Create Skeleton carries a skull.
How many runes are in Gothic 2?
Fifty-seven in Gothic II: Night of the Raven. Forty-seven are spell runes spread across the six Circles of Magic plus a separate paladin set, and ten are teleport runes fixed to locations such as the Monastery, the Castle, the Harbour City and Xardas. The 2001 original had 25, so the count more than doubled in one year.
How do you make runes in Gothic 2?
At a rune table, and only after three separate purchases. You must complete the spell's Circle of Magic, then buy that one rune's crafting skill from a trainer with learning points, then supply a blank rune plate of magic ore plus the reagent the recipe asks for. There is no general rune-making skill: each of the 39 craftable runes is learned on its own.
What ingredients do you need to craft runes in Gothic 2?
One reagent per rune, chosen to match the effect. Fire Arrow takes sulphur, Ice Arrow glacier quartz, Heal Light Wounds a healing plant, Light a gold coin, Fear a black pearl, Geyser aquamarine, Create Skeleton a skeleton bone, Summon Golem a stone golem heart and Summon Demon a demon heart. Army of Darkness takes four at once.
Can you read or translate the runes in Gothic 2?
No, and there is nothing to translate. The signs are not phonetic, not a cipher and not an alphabet, so they never combine into words. Each one names a single spell the way an icon names an app. Valheim is the exception among rune games: its runestones use the genuine Elder Futhark as a cipher for English.
Are Gothic 2 runes Elder Futhark?
No. The Elder Futhark is a 24-character alphabet cut almost entirely from straight strokes so that every letter is distinguishable by shape alone. Gothic 2's signs are little pictures: a wolf, a skull, a tornado, an arrow, a swarm of insects. Put a futhark chart beside the game's rune grid and nothing lines up.
What is the difference between a rune and a scroll in Gothic 2?
A rune is permanent and a scroll is not. Both cast the same spell using mana, but a scroll is consumed on its single use while a rune can be cast for as long as you carry it. Runes usually cost more mana per cast in exchange. That trade is why runes, not scrolls, are the goal of every mage build.
What are the Circles of Magic in Gothic 2?
Six ranks that gate which runes you may craft and use, each costing 5 learning points in Night of the Raven. The first circle holds Fire Arrow, Lightning, Light and Heal Light Wounds; the third adds Fear, Geyser and Create Skeleton; the fifth Summon Demon and Ice Wave; the sixth Rain of Fire, Breath of Death, Wave of Death and Army of Darkness.
What are the paladin runes in Gothic 2?
A separate five-rune set granted to paladins by Innos rather than learned through the mage Circles: Banish Evil, Holy Arrow, Holy Light, Minor Wound Healing and Medium Wound Healing. They are visibly different objects. Mage runes are dark blue-black ore, paladin runes are pale sandstone, and Minor Wound Healing carries a gold cross.
What is the strongest rune in Gothic 2?
Army of Darkness, the sixth-circle rune that raises a company of undead at once. It is also the most expensive thing in the crafting tree: 20 learning points for the skill and four separate reagents in one recipe, a skeleton bone, a stone golem heart, a demon heart and a black pearl. Rain of Fire and Wave of Death sit just below it.
How many teleport runes are in Gothic 2?
Ten, each locked to one destination: the Castle, the Harbour City, the Khorinis Pass, the Landowner, the Monastery, the Old Demon Tower, the Paladin Armor, the Tavern, the Valley Pass and Xardas. None of them can be crafted. You find them, buy them or are given them, which makes the full set a genuine collection goal.
Did the real Goths use runes?
Yes, which is the strangest fact about this whole series. The Goths were an East Germanic people who carved genuine Elder Futhark before their conversion to Christianity, and objects such as the Ring of Pietroassa, dated to about AD 400 and reading gutani wi hailag, still survive. Real Gothic runes exist. They have nothing to do with the game.
Is Gothic 2 based on Norse mythology?
No. Gothic 2 is set on the island of Khorinis in the invented kingdom of Myrtana, under three original gods: Innos of fire and order, Adanos of balance, and Beliar of destruction. There are no Norse gods, no Eddas and no Yggdrasil anywhere in it. The atmosphere is Germanic, the mythology is Piranha Bytes' own.
Where can I try a real rune reading online?
You can cast a free rune reading in your browser with the Way of the Runes rune-reading tool.
