Gothic 1 Remake launched on 5 June 2026, and one of the first things any mage-curious player does is open the inventory, look at a glowing lump of ore with a symbol burned into it, and wonder whether that symbol means anything. Twenty-five years after the original, with every reference book in the world a search away, did Alkimia Interactive finally use real runes?
No. The runes in Gothic 1 Remake are invented spell-sigils, not writing. All 26 of them are original designs with no alphabet behind them and nothing to decode. What Alkimia did do is rebuild every one of them from scratch for Unreal Engine 5, and the way they rebuilt them makes the point sharper than the 2001 game ever did: these runes are sorted by colour, and a real alphabet cannot be.
This guide covers what the remake's runes actually are, exactly what changed from the original, and why the new art quietly proves they were never letters.
What a rune is in the remake
A rune is a reusable spell. You slot it, spend mana, and cast it as often as you like. A scroll does the same thing once and is gone. That distinction is unchanged from the 2001 original and it is still the reason runes are the most valuable objects in the Colony.
Making one requires a rune table, a blank ore tablet, a quantity of magic ore, and mastery of the spell's Circle of Magic. Magic ore is the whole reason the penal colony exists, so every rune you inscribe is expensive by design.
What did change is who gets in the door. In 2001 you needed to join a mage guild before you could touch rune magic at all. In the remake you complete an early quest called The Price of Magic: find Torrez near the well in the southern market of the Old Camp, hand over one blank parchment and two wolf's claws, spend five learning points, and pick your first rune. Rune magic is now available in the first few hours to anyone who wants it.
That is a meaningful shift, and worth noting for a reason we will come back to: real runes worked the same way. Anybody who learned the script could carve them. There was no guild.
What Alkimia changed, and what they kept
Here is the part no review covered. Set the two rune lists side by side and the remake turns out to be an almost exact carry-over of 2001's magic system, with new names and new art on top.
| Original Gothic (2001) | Gothic 1 Remake (2026) |
|---|---|
| Fire Arrow | Fire Bolt |
| Ice Arrow | Ice Bolt |
| Wind Fist | Fist of Wind |
| Pacify | Charm |
| Firestorm | Storm of Fire |
| Ice Wave | Wave of Ice |
| Lightning | Chain Lightning |
| Destroy Undead | Death to the Undead |
| Heal | Healing |
| Wave of Death | Uriziel's Wave of Death |
| Teleport: Xardas | Teleport to the Necromancer |
| (none) | Teleport to the Sunken Tower |
The original carried 25 runes. The remake carries 26. The single addition is a teleport destination. Fireball, Ice Block, Ball Lightning, Storm Fist, Telekinesis, Pyrokinesis, Control, Sleep, Light, Rain of Fire and Breath of Death all came across keeping their names outright.
Two runes did get promoted. Fire Bolt and Healing now sit outside the Circles of Magic entirely, so a new mage can cast both at once, for 1 and 2 mana respectively. In 2001 you climbed to them. The remake hands them over with the tutorial, which fits the earlier unlock.
At the far end, nothing was touched at all. Uriziel's Wave of Death is still the sixth-circle prize, still tied to the legendary sword, still costing 40 mana a cast and carrying an ore value of 10,000, about seven times the next most valuable rune in the game.
Why the new art proves they are not letters
Now look at the icons themselves, and compare them with what the Elder Futhark is for.
The remake renders each rune as a fragment of ore lit from inside: a dark teardrop or pebble of stone with a bright sigil burned across its face, glowing outward. It is genuinely beautiful work, and it is organised by school. Fire runes burn orange and deep red. Ice runes are white and pale cyan, most of them built around the same eight-spoke starburst. Chain Lightning is a shattered blue-white branch. Healing and Light glow gold. Mind magic, Sleep and Control, sits on flat olive-green tablets. Death magic, Breath of Death and Uriziel's, is violet, and the two are so alike at inventory scale that you sort them by position rather than by looking.
That last problem is not a theory. Players hit it hard enough that someone published a Nexus mod, More Distinct Rune Icons, whose entire purpose is to recolour the set. The author's reasoning is the tell: because nearly all the runes share the same colour groups, it was difficult to pick the right one from the inventory in the heat of battle.
Hold that against the real thing. The Elder Futhark was cut into wood, bone, antler, iron and stone. It had no colour to work with, ever. Every one of its 24 characters therefore had to be told apart by shape alone, which is precisely why the futhark is built from straight strokes at sharp angles, and why no two of its letters are easy to confuse even scratched into a stick by firelight.
That is the whole difference, and it is not a matter of taste:
- A writing system is designed so that its characters are maximally distinct from one another. Confusable letters are a defect.
- Gothic's runes are designed so that each one resembles its school. Family resemblance is the feature.
The remake makes this more visible than the original did, purely because it has more runes and better lighting. In 2001 the artist Ralf Marczinczik drew the spell signs as geometric constructions inside circles, triangles and squares, on a concept sheet headed GOTHIC Zauberspruch-Zeichen, with the German spell names written underneath: Licht, Feuerball, Blitz, Heilen, Teleportation. Icons for spells, one per effect. Alkimia inherited that brief and executed it in three dimensions. Neither team was writing anything down.

The real Gothic runes, briefly
There is a genuine twist behind the word "Gothic", and it belongs to the other article in this series rather than this one. The Goths were a real East Germanic people who carved real Elder Futhark, and a handful of their inscriptions survive: the Ring of Pietroassa, found in Romania and dated to about AD 400, reads gutani wi hailag, "sacred to the Goths". The Spearhead of Kovel reads tilarids. Then the bishop Wulfila built a Greek-derived alphabet in the mid-4th century to translate the Bible, and runic writing among the Goths effectively stopped.
So real Gothic runes exist, they are dated, and we can read them. The full story is in Are the runes in Gothic 1 real?, which covers the historical side properly.
Why Myrtana has no room for real runes
The remake keeps the setting exactly: Myrtana, an invented kingdom, and the penal colony near Khorinis sealed under a magical barrier nobody can leave. The gods are Innos, Adanos and Beliar, served by Fire Mages and Water Mages, and there is nothing from Norse tradition anywhere in it. No Odin, no Yggdrasil, no Eddas.
Given that, invented sigils remain the honest choice. Dropping genuine Elder Futhark into Myrtana in 2026 would have imported a mythology the game does not have and never wanted. Alkimia was right to redraw rather than borrow.
What the game leaves out is everything the real runes carry beyond their shapes. In Norse tradition Odin wins the runes through sacrifice, hanging nine nights on Yggdrasil pierced by his own spear. From there they served as charms and protections, combined into bindrunes and sigils to hold a focused intent, and read for guidance in a practice that continues today.
Want runes you can actually read?
Gothic gives you 26 symbols that do things. The Elder Futhark gives you 24 that say things, and unlike the remake's rune table it costs no ore, no learning points and no quest from Torrez.
The easiest way in is to draw one. You can cast a free rune reading in your browser right now, using the genuine Elder Futhark and their traditional meanings, with a quick single draw for a fast question or a fuller spread for something weightier. If you would rather build the habit slowly, pull a rune of the day each morning and learn the futhark one sign at a time, or read how online rune readings work first. You can also compare the rest of the series on the runes in games hub, including Valheim, the one game that uses the real futhark, and The Witcher 3.
Alkimia rebuilt Gothic's runes beautifully and kept them meaningless, which was the correct call for Myrtana. The letters that actually carry meaning are still out here, and they are older than the Colony by fifteen centuries. , free on iOS, Android, and the web, in English and Russian.
Frequently asked questions
Are the runes in Gothic 1 Remake real runes?
No. The 26 runes in Gothic 1 Remake are invented spell-sigils burned into lumps of magic ore, not characters in an alphabet. Nothing on them spells anything, in any language. Alkimia Interactive rebuilt the art for Unreal Engine 5 when the remake launched on 5 June 2026, but the design decision from 2001 was carried over intact.
How many runes are in Gothic 1 Remake?
Twenty-six. Twenty-one are combat and utility spells, from Fire Bolt up to Uriziel's Wave of Death, and five are teleport runes that return you to the Fire Mages, the Water Mages, the Swamp Camp, the Necromancer or the Sunken Tower. The 2001 original had 25, so the remake added exactly one: the teleport to the Sunken Tower.
Are the runes in Gothic 1 Remake different from the original?
The art is new, the spell list is almost identical. Alkimia rebuilt every icon as a rendered ore fragment with an inner glow, replacing 2001's flat drawn sigils, and renamed most spells: Fire Arrow became Fire Bolt, Wind Fist became Fist of Wind, Pacify became Charm, Firestorm became Storm of Fire. The underlying set of spells barely moved.
Can you read or translate the runes in Gothic 1 Remake?
No, and there is nothing to translate. The sigils are not a cipher, not phonetic, and not an alphabet, so they do not combine into words. Each one identifies a single spell the way an icon identifies an app. Valheim is the exception among rune games: its runestones use the genuine Elder Futhark as a cipher for English.
Are Gothic 1 Remake runes Elder Futhark?
No. The Elder Futhark is a 24-character alphabet cut almost entirely from straight strokes, designed so that every letter is distinguishable by shape alone. Gothic's remake sigils are curved, branching, organic marks that rely on their glow colour to be told apart. Put a futhark chart beside the remake's rune grid and nothing lines up.
Why do all the runes look the same in Gothic 1 Remake?
Because the remake sorts them by school, not by shape. Fire runes glow orange and red, ice runes white and cyan, lightning bright blue, healing and light gold, mind magic olive-green, death magic violet. With 26 runes across roughly six colour families, several are near-identical at inventory size, which is why players published a Nexus mod called More Distinct Rune Icons purely to recolour them.
How do you unlock rune magic in Gothic 1 Remake?
Complete the early quest The Price of Magic. Find Torrez near the well in the southern market of the Old Camp, bring him one blank parchment and two wolf's claws, then spend five learning points to learn Rune Magic and choose your first rune. This is a real change from 2001, where magic was locked behind joining a mage guild.
How do you craft runes in Gothic 1 Remake?
At a rune table, using a blank ore tablet plus magic ore, and only for a spell whose Circle of Magic you have already mastered. Magic ore is the reason the penal colony exists, which makes every rune expensive. You can also buy runes from guild trainers or find them in chests and on the bodies of enemies.
What are the Circles of Magic in Gothic 1 Remake?
Six ranks that gate which runes you may use. Fire Bolt and Healing sit outside the circles and are available immediately. The first circle adds Ice Bolt, Fist of Wind and Light; the third brings Fireball, Telekinesis and Pyrokinesis; the fourth Chain Lightning and Storm of Fire; the fifth Rain of Fire and Wave of Ice; the sixth Breath of Death and Uriziel's Wave of Death.
What is the strongest rune in Gothic 1 Remake?
Uriziel's Wave of Death, the sixth-circle rune tied to the legendary sword Uriziel. It costs 40 mana per cast and carries an ore value of 10,000, roughly seven times the next most valuable rune. Breath of Death, also sixth circle, is far cheaper to cast at 5 mana and is the practical workhorse of late-game death magic.
What are the teleport runes in Gothic 1 Remake?
Five returns to fixed locations: the Fire Mages of the Old Camp, the Water Mages of the New Camp, the Swamp Camp, the Necromancer and the Sunken Tower. Each costs 5 mana. The Sunken Tower rune is the single addition the remake made to the original's rune list, which otherwise carried across unchanged.
Did the real Goths use runes?
Yes, which is the strangest fact about this whole series. The Goths were an East Germanic people who carved genuine Elder Futhark before their conversion to Christianity, and objects such as the Ring of Pietroassa, dated to about AD 400 and reading gutani wi hailag, still survive. Real Gothic runes exist. They have nothing to do with either version of the game.
Is Gothic 1 Remake based on Norse mythology?
No. The remake keeps the original setting: Myrtana, an invented kingdom, and the penal colony near Khorinis sealed under a magical barrier. The gods are Innos, Adanos and Beliar, served by Fire Mages and Water Mages. There are no Norse gods, no Eddas and no Yggdrasil anywhere in it. The atmosphere is Germanic, the mythology is original.
