Arx Fatalis turns 24 in North America on 12 November 2026, and thanks to the source code Arkane released in 2011, it still runs on modern machines through the fan-made Arx Libertatis port. Every new player meets the runes the same way: a stone in a dark mine with a mark cut into it, a spell book that copies the mark, and then the moment you hold Control and draw it in the air yourself.
No. The runes in Arx Fatalis are hand gestures with invented names, not letters. Each one is a word of power, and the game reads the direction you move the mouse, not the shape you leave behind.
That is why Arx gets its own answer. In every other game on this site a rune is something you find, buy, craft or socket. In Arx you write it, stroke by stroke, and the game checks your handwriting. It is also the game where Arkane first used runes, ten years before Dishonored. Arx Fatalis is the only game in this series where you write your own runes, and it reads the strokes, never a sound.
What is a rune in Arx Fatalis?
A rune in Arx Fatalis is a word of power that you draw with the mouse. There are 20 the player can learn. Each stands for one idea: Aam is create, Yok is fire, Taar is projectile, Vitae is life. You find each rune carved on a stone, copy it into your spell book, and from then on you can draw it.
A spell is a short phrase of two to four runes. Aam and Taar make Magic Missile; Aam, Yok and Taar make Fireball. Hold Control, draw the runes in order, release, and the spell fires. You can prepare up to three spells in advance for a fight. The Steam store page counts 50 spells; the released source code defines 49 player combinations across ten levels.
How does Arx Fatalis read a rune?
It reads directions, not pictures. Arkane opened the source code with patch 1.21 on 14 January 2011, and in the Arx Libertatis code built on it each rune is a short string of numbers laid out like a numeric keypad: 6 is right, 4 is left, 8 is up, 2 is down, and the corners are diagonals.
When you draw, the game resamples your stroke to 20 points, rounds every segment to one of eight directions, and walks that list against a table of direction patterns, forgiving a small error for shaky hands. This is what it is looking for:
| Rune | Meaning | What the game reads |
|---|---|---|
| Aam | Create | Right |
| Nhi | Negate | Left |
| Mega | Improve | Up |
| Rhaa | Lower | Down |
| Yok | Fire | Down, right, up |
| Taar | Projectile | Right, down, right |
| Vitae | Life | Right, up |
| Morte | Death | Right, down |
| Vista | Vision | Down-right, down-left |
| Folgora | Storm | Up-right, down-right |
| Tempus | Time | Up, right, down, right, up, right |
| Comunicatum | Communication | Right, down, left, down, right |
The other eight, Kaom, Stregum, Cosum, Movis, Spacium, Tera, Cetrius and Fridd, are built the same way. Kaom, protection, is the only one the table accepts in two versions, a long one and a short one, so a hurried shield still works.
Arkane hid a few extra entries in that table too: patterns that are not runes at all but cheat gestures, including a six-stroke staircase the code names Passwall. A real alphabet has nowhere to put a secret like that.
Why do Aam and Nhi look the same?
Because they are the same line. Aam, create, is one straight stroke to the right. Nhi, negate, is one straight stroke to the left. Mega, improve, goes up, and Rhaa, lower, goes down. Leave them on paper and you cannot tell create from negate, or improve from lower.
That is the clearest proof that an Arx rune is not a written sign. Writing is what is left after the hand has gone: the reader sees the mark, not the motion. In Arx the motion is the meaning, and the mark is only a glowing trail that fades.
The Elder Futhark works the other way round. It was cut from straight strokes so that each of its 24 letters could be told apart by shape alone, scratched on a stick or a stone, long after the carver had left. Real runes also avoid horizontal lines, because they were cut across the grain of wood. Arx builds its four simplest runes from exactly the strokes a carver avoided: two flat lines and two upright ones.

The real runes, briefly
The Elder Futhark is the oldest runic alphabet: 24 letters in three groups of eight, named after its first six sounds, f, u, th, a, r and k, and used by Germanic peoples from roughly 150 to 800 CE. Each rune is a sound, a name and a word at once. Fehu is f and means cattle and wealth; Uruz is u and the wild ox.
That makes the real runes a little like Arx's after all, but only in one direction. A futhark letter has a meaning and a sound, so it can name a thing and also spell any word. An Arx rune keeps the meaning and drops the sound, so it can only ever be one word.
The belief grew on top of the writing. In Norse tradition Odin wins the runes by hanging nine nights on Yggdrasil, pierced by his own spear. People cut them as charms and protections, joined them into bindrunes and sigils to hold a focused intent, and read them for guidance in a practice that continues today.
Why the world of Arx has no room for real runes
Because nothing in it is Norse. Arx is a world whose sun has failed. Humans, goblins, trolls, dwarves and rat-men live in caves stacked level by level underground, and the villain is Akbaa, an invented God of Destruction. There is no Odin and no Yggdrasil. Several rune names lean on Latin and Italian instead: Vitae and Tempus come from the Latin words for life and time, and Morte is the Italian word for death.
The runes came to Arx from a game, not from history. Arkane designed Arx Fatalis as a successor to Ultima Underworld and pitched it as Ultima Underworld III, but Electronic Arts held the rights and would not agree to Arkane's terms. Ultima Underworld built its spells from 24 collected rune stones, each a word of power, and Arx kept that idea and moved it into the player's hand. The full story of those stones is in the Ultima guide.
The idea did not travel far inside Arkane. Its engine went into Dark Messiah of Might and Magic in 2006, and by Dishonored in 2012 a rune had become a carved whale bone that buys a power. The drawn rune stayed in Arx.
Want runes you can actually read?
Arx Fatalis asks you to remember 20 hand movements, and in return you can cast about 50 spells. The Elder Futhark asks you to learn 24 shapes, and in return you can read every word ever carved in them.
The easiest way in is to draw one. You can cast a free rune reading in your browser right now, using the genuine Elder Futhark and their traditional meanings, with a quick single draw for a fast question or a fuller spread for something weightier. If you would rather build the habit slowly, pull a rune of the day each morning, or read how online rune readings work first. The rest of the series is on the runes in games hub, including Gothic 2, the other big mage RPG of 2002, and Diablo IV, whose runes also combine like words.
The runes of Arx fade the moment you finish the spell. The real ones were cut so they would stay. , free on iOS, Android, and the web, in English and Russian.
Frequently asked questions
Are the runes in Arx Fatalis real runes?
No. The 20 runes in Arx Fatalis are invented spell words drawn as mouse gestures, not letters of any alphabet. Aam means create, Yok fire and Taar projectile, and none of them carries a sound you could spell with. Arkane Studios made them up for the underground world of Arx in 2002. They have no link to the Elder Futhark or any other historical script.
How many runes are in Arx Fatalis?
Twenty that the player can learn and draw: Aam, Nhi, Mega, Yok, Taar, Kaom, Vitae, Vista, Stregum, Morte, Cosum, Comunicatum, Movis, Tempus, Folgora, Spacium, Tera, Cetrius, Rhaa and Fridd. The game's source code lists a twenty-first, Akbaa, named after the God of Destruction the hero must stop. It sits in the rune list, but the player can never learn or draw it.
How do you cast spells in Arx Fatalis?
Hold the Control key and the hero raises a hand. Draw each rune of the spell in the air with the mouse, one after another, then let go, and the spell fires when you leave magic mode. Up to three spells can be prepared in advance and released later at the press of a button. The Xbox version swapped the mouse for the directional pad.
How do you get new runes in Arx Fatalis?
You find them carved on stones in the world and copy each one into your spell book. A rune you have not found cannot be used, so every new stone opens every spell that needs it. The first two most players find, Aam and Yok, combine into Ignite, the small spell that lights torches and cooking fires in the dark mines.
What do the runes in Arx Fatalis mean?
Each rune is one word. Aam means create, Nhi negate, Mega improve, Rhaa lower, Yok fire, Fridd ice, Folgora storm, Taar projectile, Kaom protection, Vitae life, Morte death, Vista vision, Stregum magic, Cosum object, Movis movement, Tempus time, Spacium space, Tera earth, Cetrius poison and Comunicatum communication. Spells are short phrases made from two to four of them.
What is the Fireball rune combination in Arx Fatalis?
Aam, Yok, Taar: create, fire, projectile. The combinations read like short commands, so the logic is easy to follow. Aam and Taar alone make Magic Missile, Aam, Fridd and Taar make an ice projectile, and Aam, Folgora and Taar make Lightning Strike. Swap the middle word and the same create-and-throw phrase throws something else.
How many spells are in Arx Fatalis?
The Steam store page says 50. The game's open source code defines 49 rune combinations for player spells, from first-level Magic Missile, Ignite, Douse and Magic Sight up to tenth-level Freeze Time, Mass Incinerate, Mass Lightning Strike and Control Target. The longest spells use four runes; Mass Incinerate is Mega, Aam, Mega, Yok.
Can you read or translate the runes in Arx Fatalis?
You can translate them, because each one stands for a single word, but you cannot read them as writing. No rune carries a sound, so they never combine into words of a language, only into spells. They work like a small vocabulary of commands. To read a real runic inscription you need an alphabet such as the Elder Futhark, where each sign is a sound.
Are the Arx Fatalis runes Elder Futhark?
No. None of the 20 shapes or names comes from the Elder Futhark. A futhark letter is a few straight strokes that are told apart by shape alone and stand for a sound. An Arx rune is a movement of the hand, recognised by the direction of each stroke, and it stands for a whole word such as fire, life or time.
Why do Aam and Nhi look like the same line?
Because in Arx Fatalis the direction of a stroke matters more than its shape. Aam, create, is one straight stroke to the right. Nhi, negate, is the same stroke drawn to the left. The game's recogniser reads which way your hand moved, so one line can mean two opposite things. A carved letter has no direction left to read once it is cut.
Is Arx Fatalis related to Ultima Underworld?
Yes, in spirit. Arkane designed Arx Fatalis as a successor to Ultima Underworld and pitched it as Ultima Underworld III, but Electronic Arts held the rights and would not allow a sequel on Arkane's terms. The Underworld games also built spells from collected rune stones, so the idea of runes as words of power came to Arx from there.
Is Arx Fatalis set in a Norse world?
No. Arx is an invented world whose sun has failed, driving humans, goblins, trolls, dwarves and rat-men into caves stacked level by level underground. Its villain is Akbaa, an original God of Destruction. There are no Norse gods, no Yggdrasil and no runic alphabet. Several rune names lean on Latin and Italian instead: Vitae, Tempus and Morte.
Is Arx Fatalis connected to Dishonored?
Yes. Arx Fatalis was Arkane Studios' first game, released in Germany on 28 June 2002. Arkane reused its engine for Dark Messiah of Might and Magic in 2006 and went on to make Dishonored in 2012. Dishonored has runes too, but there they are whale-bone tokens that buy powers. Arkane never made runes into letters in either game.
