Ultima turns 45 this year. Richard Garriott's first Ultima came out in 1981, and its maps of Sosaria already carried lines of angular letters with no key in the box to read them. Players worked them out by hand. Anyone who sees those letters now on a Britannian signpost asks the same question.
Yes, mostly. The runes in Ultima are a real runic alphabet put to work for English. Britannia's script is built on the Germanic runes, and every sign, shrine and gravestone written in it can be read.
That puts Ultima beside Valheim and God of War, the two other games in this series with real runic letters on screen. What sets it apart is the other half of the word. In most games a rune is either a letter on a wall or a power in your pack. In Ultima the magic runes are letters too: the eight Runes of Virtue spell a word, and the 24 rune stones of Ultima Underworld each carry the first letter of a word of power. Ultima is the one series where a rune is a sign and a name at once, which is how the real futhark worked.
What is a rune in Ultima?
In Ultima a rune is two things. It is a letter of the Britannian runic alphabet, used on maps, signs, books and tombstones from Ultima I in 1981 to Ultima IX in 1999. It is also a magic object: the Runes of Virtue in Ultima IV, the rune stones of Ultima Underworld in 1992 and the recall runes of Ultima Online in 1997.
The alphabet runs through almost the whole series. The Ultima Codex traces it game by game:
- Ultima I put runes on the maps of Sosaria, with no guide.
- Ultima IV relayed the true Axiom of Infinity at its shrines only in runic, and was the first game to ship with a translation guide.
- Ultima V wrote its signs and books in runes and revealed the Words of Power only in runic. Its Book of Lore says runic was more common in the countryside than in the cities.
- Ultima VI printed a translation key in its Compendium.
- Ultima VII still carved runes on signs, tombstones and spellbooks, but Batlin claims the alphabet is being replaced by Latin letters.
- Ultima IX used runes on its town maps.
Which runic alphabet does Ultima use?
Ultima uses its own Britannian runic, which the Ultima Codex describes as based on the Germanic and Norse runic alphabet, with shapes taken mainly from the Elder Futhark. It is mapped onto English spelling, not sound: the original alphabet had no Q, and U and V shared one rune. Most signs simply stand in for one Latin letter.
That makes it a cipher, the same idea Valheim and God of War use. But Ultima added something they did not. The classic alphabet has special runes for common two-letter combinations: TH, EE, NG, EA and ST. When the series' spiritual successor Shroud of the Avatar rebuilt the script, those were the signs it dropped.
Those five pairs are where Ultima stops being a pure cipher and drifts towards what runes really were. Real rune rows wrote sounds, not spellings, so a sound English writes with two Latin letters often had one rune:
| Ultima pair-rune | Real rune for the same sound | Rune row |
|---|---|---|
| TH | ᚦ thurisaz | Elder Futhark |
| NG | ᛜ ingwaz | Elder Futhark |
| EA | ᛠ ear | Anglo-Saxon futhorc only |
| ST | ᛥ stan | Anglo-Saxon futhorc only |
| EE | No single rune | None |
Four of the five have a real rune behind them, and two of those existed only in England. For a kingdom called Britannia, the futhorc is the right family to borrow from.
Why do the eight Runes of Virtue spell INFINITY?
Because each one carries a letter. Ultima IV, released on 16 September 1985 for the Apple II, asks you to become the Avatar by mastering eight virtues. Every shrine admits you only if you hold that virtue's rune. One side shows the virtue's symbol, the other a runic letter, and the eight together spell INFINITY.
Each rune recovered is worth 100 experience points, but the letters are the real reward. The shrines relay the Axiom of Infinity only in runic, so the answer to the game's final question is written in the same script as the stones in your pack. A player who learned the alphabet could read the ending before reaching it.
That double life, object and letter at once, is the real runes' habit too. Every futhark letter has a name that is also a word: ᚠ fehu is cattle and wealth, ᛃ jera is the year and its harvest. Scribes used that. The Beowulf manuscript writes the word ēthel, homeland, with the single rune ᛟ that is named for it, and the Old English poet Cynewulf signed four poems by weaving the runes of his name into the verse, each rune read as its name-word. Ultima IV made the same move in the opposite direction: eight sacred objects that turn out to be letters.
The 24 rune stones of Ultima Underworld
Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss, released on 21 March 1992 by Blue Sky Productions (later Looking Glass Studios), replaced reagents with rune stones. There are 24, from An to Ylem, each etched with the rune for its word of power. A spell uses up to three stones, so every stone you find opens new spells from a list of over 40.
No syllables are spoken and nothing is burned. You hold the stones and make the gestures, and what you own decides what you can cast. There are no stones for Xen or Zu, which is how the count lands on 24, the same number as the Elder Futhark. We found no statement that Blue Sky planned that match; it falls out of Ultima's words of power running from A to Z.
The pattern underneath is closer to the futhark than the number. Each stone is a letter and a word whose first sound is that letter, which is exactly how the real rune names were built:
| Underworld stone | Its meaning | Futhark rune for that letter | The rune's name means |
|---|---|---|---|
| An | Negate | ᚨ ansuz | A god |
| Bet | Small | ᛒ berkanan | Birch |
| Flam | Flame | ᚠ fehu | Cattle, wealth |
| Lor | Light | ᛚ laguz | Water |
| Mani | Life | ᛗ mannaz | Man |
| Sanct | Protection | ᛊ sowilo | Sun |
| Tym | Time | ᛏ tiwaz | The god Tyr |
The words differ, but the design principle is the same: a sign, a sound and a meaning bundled in one object. Ultima Online kept the stones' language and changed their job. There a blank rune marked with Mark (Kal Por Ylem) remembers a place, and Recall (Kal Ort Por) takes you back to it.

The real runes, briefly
The Elder Futhark is the oldest rune row: 24 letters in three groups of eight, named after its first six, f, u, th, a, r and k, and used from roughly 150 to 800 CE. Around 800 the Vikings cut it to the 16-letter Younger Futhark. In England it went the other way, growing into the futhorc of more than 30 signs.
The runes were never only an alphabet. In Norse tradition Odin wins them by hanging nine nights on Yggdrasil, pierced by his own spear. People cut them as charms and protections, joined them into bindrunes and sigils, and read them for guidance in a practice that continues today. If you want the English branch, the Middle-earth guide shows the real futhorc on Thror's Map in The Hobbit.
Why Britannia got real runes
Britannia is not a Norse world. It has no Odin and no Yggdrasil, and its moral order rests on eight virtues and three principles: Truth, Love and Courage. It is a medieval English kingdom ruled by Lord British, the in-game form of Richard Garriott, where people say thee and thou.
That is why the Germanic runes fit. They give English speech an older face, the way the futhorc once did for real. And Ultima even tells the end of that story. In Ultima VII Batlin claims runic is giving way to Latin letters, and the later games lean on plain text. In England the futhorc faded the same way after Christianisation, as the Latin alphabet took over. Britannia's runes went out like England's.
Want runes you can actually read?
Ultima taught a generation of players to read runic letters, and even made its magic stones spell. The real runes add the layer the games only hint at: each of the 24 Elder Futhark letters carries a name and a meaning you can read.
The easiest way in is to draw one. You can cast a free rune reading in your browser right now, using the genuine Elder Futhark and their traditional meanings, with a quick single draw for a fast question or a fuller spread for something weightier. If you would rather build the habit slowly, pull a rune of the day each morning, or read how online rune readings work first. The rest of the series is on the runes in games hub, including Tunic, whose invented script writes English sounds, and Fable, whose runes are English letters in disguise.
The Avatar's eight stones spell one word. The real runes spell every word, and each letter means something on its own. , free on iOS, Android, and the web, in English and Russian.
Frequently asked questions
Are the runes in Ultima real runes?
Yes, mostly. Britannia's runic alphabet is built on the real Germanic runes, with Elder Futhark shapes, but it writes English rather than any language the runes once carried. Each sign stands for an English letter, plus a few for pairs such as TH and NG. So the shapes are borrowed from history, while the spelling underneath is modern.
What is the Britannian runic alphabet?
It is the script of Britannia, the world of the Ultima games. The Ultima Codex describes it as based on the Germanic and Norse runic alphabet. It gives most English letters their own rune, lacked a Q in its original form, lets U and V share one sign, and adds special runes for common two-letter combinations such as TH, EE, NG, EA and ST.
Can you read the runes in Ultima?
Yes. Because each rune maps to an English letter or letter pair, any sign, book or gravestone in Britannia can be transliterated with a chart. Ultima I shipped with no key at all, so early players worked the letters out by hand. Ultima IV was the first game in the series to ship with a translation guide, and the Ultima VI Compendium printed a key as well.
Which Ultima games use runes?
Nearly all of them. Runic letters appear on the maps of Ultima I in 1981, at the shrines of Ultima IV, on signs and in books in Ultima V, on signs, tombstones and spellbooks in Ultima VII, and on town maps in Ultima IX in 1999. Ultima Online used runic on its early maps, then dropped the script in later releases.
What are the Runes of Virtue in Ultima IV?
They are eight small stones, one for each of the Eight Virtues, such as Honesty, Compassion, Justice and Humility. Each shrine of virtue lets you in only if you carry its rune, and each rune you recover gives 100 experience points. One side shows the virtue's symbol and the other a single runic letter, so every rune is also a letter.
What word do the Runes of Virtue spell?
INFINITY. The Ultima Codex records that each of the eight runes carries one runic letter, and laid side by side they spell the word. It is no accident that the word has eight letters. Ultima IV's shrines relay the Axiom of Infinity only in runic, so a player who learned the alphabet could read the final answer of the game in its own script.
How do rune stones work in Ultima Underworld?
You cast spells by combining them. Ultima Underworld (1992) replaced reagents with rune stones, each etched with a rune naming one word of power, such as An for negate, Flam for flame or Sanct for protection. A spell uses up to three stones, and you can only cast what your collection covers, so finding a new stone opens a new set of spells.
How many rune stones are in Ultima Underworld?
Twenty-four, from An to Ylem. The words of power run through the alphabet, but there are no stones for Xen or Zu, which leaves 24, the same number of letters as the Elder Futhark. We found no statement that the match was planned. It falls out of the English alphabet, since Ultima's magic words follow it from A to Y.
What are recall runes in Ultima Online?
They are travel tokens. In Ultima Online (1997) you cast Mark, words of power Kal Por Ylem, on a blank rune to record where you stand. Later you cast Recall, Kal Ort Por, on that marked rune, in your backpack or in a runebook, to jump straight back. Gate Travel uses the same rune to open a moongate for a whole group.
Why does the Ultima runic alphabet have runes for TH and NG?
Because English has sounds its Latin letters write in pairs. The real rune rows solved the same problem the same way: the Elder Futhark had thurisaz for th and ingwaz for ng, and the Anglo-Saxon futhorc added ear for ea and stan for st. Four of Ultima's five pair-runes have a real single rune behind the same sound.
Is Ultima based on Norse mythology?
No. Britannia has no Odin, no Yggdrasil and no Eddas. Its moral world rests on the Eight Virtues and the three principles of Truth, Love and Courage, and the kingdom is ruled by Lord British, the in-game form of designer Richard Garriott. The runes give the setting age and an English medieval feel rather than a Viking one.
How is Ultima different from Valheim and God of War?
All three put real runic shapes over English. Ultima did it first, in 1981, decades before God of War (2018) and Valheim (2021). It is also the only one of the three whose magic runes are letters too: the Runes of Virtue spell a word and each Underworld stone carries the first letter of its word of power.
Did English ever have its own runes?
Yes. The Anglo-Saxons carved the futhorc, a rune row adapted from the Elder Futhark to fit Old English and later grown to more than 30 signs. It gave English single runes for sounds like ea and st. After Christianisation the Latin alphabet replaced it, which is close to what Ultima VII describes when Batlin claims runic is giving way to Latin letters.
Where can I try a real rune reading online?
You can cast a free rune reading in your browser with the Way of the Runes rune-reading tool.
