Assassin's Creed Valhalla turns six on 10 November 2026, and by February 2022 it had passed $1 billion in revenue. Most of those players have opened the gear menu, seen a small glowing stone called a rune sitting in a slot on Eivor's axe, and asked the obvious question.
No. The runes in Assassin's Creed Valhalla are stat stones, not writing. The real runes were never in your inventory: they were on the game's website.
That is what makes Valhalla worth its own answer. In May 2020, months before launch, Ubisoft's official site ran a line of runes in its background, and a fan decoded them. They were not the famous 24-letter alphabet most games borrow. They were the 16-letter Younger Futhark, spelled the way Viking carvers spelled, and they quoted Odin. The marketing site got Viking writing right; the game turned the word into loot.
What is a rune in Assassin's Creed Valhalla?
A rune in Valhalla is a stat bonus you socket into gear. Ubisoft's help pages say only weapons and armour of Superior quality or better take runes. Each rune adds one number, such as armour, health or light attack damage, and most come in minor, standard and greater strengths.
The slots grow with the gear. Items go Fine, Superior, Flawless and Mythical, with 0, 1, 2 and 3 rune slots. Gunnar the blacksmith raises the quality with carbon, nickel and tungsten ingots. A few runes, such as the diamond-shaped Reaper Rune, add a perk instead: restore some health after an assassination.
The numbers are small and exact. The fan-run Access the Animus wiki lists the Shell Rune at 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0 armour across its three strengths, and the Rune of Life at 11.0, 14.9 and 18.9 health. Title Update 1.3.1 in 2021 made weapon runes affect only the weapon they sit in.
Then, on 27 September 2022, Title Update 1.6.1 added a building to Ravensthorpe called the Rune Forge. At settlement level 4 it lets you "turn the perks of your currently owned gear into new runes in exchange for silver". That sentence settles the question. In Valhalla a rune is what you get when you take a bonus off one item and store it for another. The 2022 Dawn of Ragnarök expansion went one step further with Divine gear and 8-point Odin Runes, and those are still numbers.
What do the runes on the Valhalla website say?
They quote Odin. In early May 2020, a fan posting as Cristophorus on Twitter noticed animated runes drifting behind the official Valhalla website. Gaming sites in Russia, Italy, Spain and Germany reported his result in the first days of May 2020.
The text is stanza 77 of the Hávamál, "the sayings of the High One", the Old Norse poem in which Odin gives advice. It survives in one manuscript, the 13th-century Codex Regius. The stanza opens:
Deyr fé, deyja frændr, deyr sjalfr it sama.
Cattle die, kinsmen die, and you yourself die the same. The stanza ends with the one thing that never dies: the judgement passed on each of the dead. It fits the game's story about a raider who leaves Norway to make a name in England.
The decoding is the interesting part. Cristophorus first tried the Elder Futhark, the 24-letter row on most rune charts, and the text would not resolve. Then he spotted a letter that belongs only to the Younger Futhark. Reddit users gave him the last key: Viking writing followed speech sounds and never cut the same rune twice in a row. With 16 letters and that rule, the line read cleanly.
None of the 2020 reports carries a comment from Ubisoft. Nobody at the studio confirmed the code or explained it. It sat there, readable, for anyone who knew the right alphabet.
Why the Younger Futhark is the right alphabet for Eivor
Because it is the alphabet Eivor would have used. Around 800 CE, as the Viking Age began, Scandinavian carvers cut the 24 letters of the Elder Futhark down to 16. Nearly every Viking runestone is carved in the shorter row. Valhalla is set in 872 to 878 CE, two generations into that change.
The website got four details right that games usually miss:
| Detail | What Viking carvers did | What the Valhalla website did |
|---|---|---|
| Alphabet | The 16-letter Younger Futhark | The 16-letter Younger Futhark |
| Language | Old Norse | Old Norse, from the Hávamál |
| Double letters | Cut once, even for a long sound | Cut once |
| Text | Memorials, names, verse | A stanza of Odin's verse |
Compare God of War, the other big Norse game of the period. Santa Monica Studio carved real letters on almost every wall in Midgard, but used the Elder Futhark, which the Vikings had already retired. That is a Viking saga told in the runes of the Vikings' great-grandparents. Hellblade also uses the old row, and its hidden sentence is in English.
Valhalla's website is so far the only case in this series where both the alphabet and the language match the century. The shorter row is also harder to read. With 16 letters, one rune covers both k and g, another both t and d, and readers worked out which from context. Add the rule against doubled runes, and a real Viking inscription is a puzzle even when you know every letter.
Which rune is on the necklace in the Valhalla trailer?
Peorð, the P rune, and it is the one place the marketing slipped. The novelist Thilde Kold Holdt, author of a Viking trilogy, picked it out of the cinematic trailer on 2 May 2020 and quoted the Old English rune poem: Peorð is "a source of recreation and amusement to the great, where warriors sit blithely together in the beerhall". She called it a great choice.
As a reading of the poem it is. As a Viking's jewellery it is odd, because the Younger Futhark has no P. When Viking carvers needed a p sound, they used the B rune. Peorð lives in the Elder Futhark and in the Anglo-Saxon futhorc, the English branch of the family, which is where the rune poem comes from.
So the trailer hangs an English rune on a Norwegian raider. You could read that as a mistake, or as foreshadowing: Eivor ends up settled in England, among people who had carved the futhorc for centuries. Either way, the website's Hávamál line is the more careful work. Someone there knew which row a Norseman used in 873.

The real runes, briefly
The Elder Futhark is the oldest runic alphabet: 24 letters in three rows of eight, used by Germanic peoples from roughly 150 to 800 CE. Each letter has a sound, a name and a meaning. Fehu is f and means cattle and wealth, Uruz is u and the wild ox, Ansuz is a and a god. The name futhark comes from its first six letters. In the Viking Age it shrank to the 16-letter Younger Futhark; in England it grew into the futhorc.
The magic grew on top of the writing. In Norse tradition Odin wins the runes by hanging nine nights on the world-tree Yggdrasil, pierced by his own spear, and the same Hávamál that the website quoted tells that story in its own voice. From there the runes served as charms and protections, were joined into bindrunes and sigils, and are read for guidance today.
Why Valhalla's real runes stayed off the gear
Because Valhalla is a loot game set in real history, and the two pull in different directions. The history is careful. Eivor's England is the real one, with the kingdoms of Wessex, Mercia, East Anglia and Northumbria, and in October 2021 Ubisoft released a free, combat-free Discovery Tour: Viking Age, made with historians and partners such as the British Library and the National Museum of Denmark.
The loot needed a name, though, and "rune" is the word games reach for when they mean "magic stone in a slot". We traced that habit through six other games in why so many games call their gear runes, and Valhalla follows it exactly. Even the tattoo sets borrow from the Eddas: one is named the Sigrdrifumal set, after the poem in which a valkyrie teaches a hero which runes to cut on his sword.
The result is a game with two kinds of rune that never meet. The one you grind for is a number. The one that would have meant something to Eivor was in the website's background, and the game never put it in your hands.
Want runes you can actually read?
Valhalla's website proved the point for free: learn the right letters and a line of runes turns into Odin talking. The runes in games hub collects the rest of the series, from Valheim and its English runestones to Skyrim and its dragon alphabet.
The easiest way in is to draw one. You can cast a free rune reading in your browser right now, using the genuine Elder Futhark and their traditional meanings, with a quick single draw for a fast question or a fuller spread for something weightier. If you would rather build the habit slowly, pull a rune of the day each morning and learn the futhark one sign at a time, or read how online rune readings work first.
Eivor sockets runes for armour. The Hávamál says the only thing that outlasts us is what is said about us, and runes are how the Vikings made sure it got said. , free on iOS, Android, and the web, in English and Russian.
Frequently asked questions
Are the runes in Assassin's Creed Valhalla real runes?
The ones you collect are not. A rune in Assassin's Creed Valhalla is a stat stone that you socket into a weapon or a piece of armour for more health, armour or damage. It encodes no letters and no language. The real runes sit outside the game: the official website hid a stanza of the Hávamál in the 16-letter Younger Futhark in 2020.
How do runes work in Assassin's Creed Valhalla?
You socket them into rune slots on weapons and armour. Ubisoft's help pages say only gear of Superior quality or better takes runes. Each rune adds one stat, such as armour, health or light attack damage, and most come in minor, standard and greater strengths. A 2021 update made weapon runes affect only the weapon they sit in, not your whole build.
How many rune slots can gear have in Valhalla?
Up to three in the base game. Gear goes Fine, Superior, Flawless and Mythical, and each step past Fine opens one slot, so Mythical gear holds three. Gunnar the blacksmith raises an item's quality with carbon, nickel and tungsten ingots. The Dawn of Ragnarök expansion added a Divine tier with an upgraded slot for its 8-point Odin Runes.
What is the Rune Forge in Assassin's Creed Valhalla?
A settlement building added by Title Update 1.6.1 on 27 September 2022. Once Ravensthorpe reaches level 4 you can build it and turn the perks of gear you own into new runes, paid for in silver. Ubisoft's notes warn that it does not support every item in the game. It confirms what a Valhalla rune is: a stored bonus, not a letter.
What runes were hidden on the Assassin's Creed Valhalla website?
In early May 2020 the official site showed animated runes in its background. A fan posting as Cristophorus decoded them within days of the reveal. They were Younger Futhark, the 16-letter alphabet of the Viking Age, and they spelled stanza 77 of the Hávamál, the Old Norse poem of Odin's advice, preserved in the 13th-century Codex Regius.
What does Hávamál stanza 77 say?
Cattle die, kinsmen die, and you yourself die the same, but one thing never dies: the judgement passed on each of the dead. In Old Norse it opens Deyr fé, deyja frændr. It fits Eivor's story well: a raider leaving Norway for England to build a name that outlives the raid.
Which runic alphabet did the Vikings in Valhalla use?
The Younger Futhark. Around 800 CE Scandinavian carvers cut the 24-letter Elder Futhark down to 16 letters, and nearly every Viking runestone uses the shorter row. Valhalla is set in 872 to 878 CE, deep in that period, so a Norwegian raider like Eivor would have written in 16 runes. The game's own website used exactly that alphabet.
Why did the Valhalla rune code never repeat a rune?
Because Viking carvers did not double letters. The fan who decoded the website first tried the Elder Futhark and got nowhere. Reddit users pointed out that Viking writing followed speech sounds and never cut the same rune twice in a row, even where the spoken word had a doubled sound. With that rule, the background text read cleanly as the Hávamál.
Is the rune on the necklace in the Valhalla trailer real?
Yes, but it is not a Viking rune. The novelist Thilde Kold Holdt identified it in May 2020 as Peorð, the P rune of the Anglo-Saxon rune poem. The 16-letter Younger Futhark has no P at all; Viking carvers wrote p with the B rune. So the necklace is a real English rune worn by a Norwegian raider.
Can you read runes in Assassin's Creed Valhalla?
Not the gear runes. A stat stone like the Rune of Life carries a number, not a sound, so there is nothing to read. The readable runes are the website's: once you know the 16 Younger Futhark letters and the rule against doubled runes, the 2020 background text becomes a stanza of Old Norse verse you can check against the Codex Regius.
Is Assassin's Creed Valhalla historically accurate about Vikings?
It is set in real history, 872 to 878 CE, among real kingdoms such as Wessex, Mercia and East Anglia, and Ubisoft built a combat-free Discovery Tour: Viking Age with historians and museums such as the British Library and the National Museum of Denmark. The rune system is the clear exception: it is a loot mechanic, not Viking writing.
Is Assassin's Creed Valhalla based on Norse mythology?
Partly. Eivor's world is historical, but the story keeps crossing into dreamscapes of Asgard and Jötunheim, and the Dawn of Ragnarök expansion casts the player as Odin in the dwarven realm of Svartalfheim. Even its tattoo sets borrow from the Eddas: one is named the Sigrdrifumal set, after the Eddic poem in which a valkyrie teaches a hero rune magic.
Which game has more accurate runes, Valhalla or God of War?
Each gets half. God of War carves real letters all over its world but uses the 24-letter Elder Futhark, which the Vikings had already retired. Valhalla used the right 16-letter Younger Futhark, and even the right spelling rules, but only on its website. In the game itself, a rune is a stat stone. Neither game puts correct Viking writing on screen.
Where can I try a real rune reading online?
You can cast a free rune reading in your browser with the Way of the Runes rune-reading tool. It uses the genuine 24 Elder Futhark runes and their traditional meanings, with quick single draws for a fast question and fuller spreads for something weightier, and a full description for every rune. It works on any device, in English and Russian.
