Why Do So Many Games Call Their Gear Runes?

No, gear runes are not real runes, just stat stones. Yet Iron Age warriors did cut runes into spears and swords, and those runes gave the weapon a name.

Open the inventory in Summoners War, Guild Wars 2, Lost Ark, Divinity: Original Sin 2, Lords of the Fallen or No Rest for the Wicked, and you find the same thing under the same word: a small stone or plate called a rune, waiting for a slot. It adds attack speed, fire damage or a new skill. It never adds a letter.

No. Gear runes are stat stones, not runes. None of these six games puts a sound, a letter or a word into its runes.

The odd part is that the idea is not invented. Germanic warriors really did cut runes into their spearheads and sword fittings, about 1,800 years ago, and a few of those weapons survive. What they cut tells you exactly what the games left out. The oldest runes on weapons did not make them stronger. They gave them a name.

What is a gear rune in games?

A gear rune is an upgrade item you slot into equipment. It changes a number, unlocks a set bonus or adds a skill, and it can usually be removed or swapped. It has an icon and a stat line. It does not have a sound, and it cannot be combined with other runes to spell a word.

The idea is old in games. The original Guild Wars (2005) already sold runes as "suffix upgrade components" for armour: a Superior rune added +3 to a profession attribute and took 75 points off maximum Health. Two decades later the word is everywhere, and almost always on the same kind of object.

Which games call their gear runes?

Here are the six, side by side. Read down the third column and the pattern is plain.

GameYearWhere a rune goesWhat one rune does
Summoners War20146 slots on each monsterA main stat, up to 4 substats and a set bonus
Guild Wars 22012One per armour piece, 6 in allBonuses that stack up to 6 of a kind
Lost Ark2019 (Korea), 2022 (West)One per combat skill, up to 8Changes how that skill behaves
Divinity: Original Sin 22017Weapons, armour, rings and amuletsA different stat in each kind of slot
Lords of the Fallen2023Up to 3 slots on weapons and shieldsA stat or buildup tied to the slot's shape
No Rest for the Wicked2024 (early access)WeaponsA special attack paid for with Focus

Summoners War is the purest version. A rune has a star grade from 1 to 6, a rarity from Normal to Legendary, and can be powered up with Mana Stones as far as +15. The community wiki lists 21 sets. Four Violent runes give a 22% chance of an extra turn; four Swift runes add 25% attack speed; four Rage runes add 40% critical damage.

Guild Wars 2 stacks by count. A Superior Rune of the Scholar gives +25 Power with one rune and +125 Ferocity at six, and the official wiki lists about 100 superior runes. Weapons get sigils instead, a second word for the same idea.

Lost Ark puts runes on skills, not items: Galewind raises casting speed by 5% at Uncommon and 14% at Legendary. No Rest for the Wicked goes further, so a rune is the skill itself: Fire Arrow costs 20 Focus, Arrowstorm 150, and pulling a rune out destroys the weapon it came from.

One rune, three meanings

Divinity: Original Sin 2 has the cleverest system of the six, and it shows the gap between a rune and a letter more clearly than any other.

Its six rune types (Flame, Frost, Masterwork, Rock, Thunder and Venom) come in Small, Medium, Large and Giant sizes, and each one changes its effect with the slot. A Small Flame Rune adds 9% fire damage in a weapon, 5% fire resistance in armour and 3% critical chance in a ring or amulet. A Small Frost Rune adds 9% water damage, 5% water resistance or a little extra movement.

Lords of the Fallen sorts by shape instead. Every slot has one of four forms, Ativ, Velox, Devoth or Anarkos, tied to Strength, Agility, Radiance and Inferno, and a rune fits only its own shape. The wiki counts 38 of them, with names like Atarux, Tumul and Xiax. They sound like words. They are not words in any language.

A real rune works the other way. Its meaning does not depend on where you put it. Tiwaz is the sound T wherever it is carved, and its value comes from what it spells next to other letters, not from the slot it sits in.

Did real warriors put runes on their weapons?

Yes, and this is where the games are closer to history than they know. Some of the oldest runic inscriptions anywhere are on weapons.

  • The Øvre Stabu spearhead, from a grave in Østre Toten, Norway, dated about 160 to 250 CE, reads ᚱᚨᚢᚾᛁᛃᚨᛉ, raunijaz: "tester".
  • The Mos spearhead, from Gotland, reads gaois. The Swedish History Museum translates it "the screamer".
  • The Dahmsdorf spearhead, from Brandenburg, reads ranja, "router".
  • The Seax of Beagnoth, a 72 cm single-edged blade from the 10th century, was pulled out of the Thames at Battersea in 1857. Its smith inlaid the whole 28-letter Anglo-Saxon futhorc along the blade, and the name Beagnoth. It is in the British Museum.

Look at what the spearheads say. Tester, router, screamer: the usual reading is that they are the weapon's own name, the way a sword in a saga has a name. Others name an owner or a smith. Not one reads as a bonus, and they were rare: at Illerup in Denmark, only 2 of 366 lance heads carry an inscription at all.

So the games kept the object and the slot and dropped the one thing a real weapon rune did. A Lords of the Fallen rune adds bleed buildup to a sword. An Iron Age rune told you what the sword was called.

What Sigrdrífumál says about runes on a sword

There is one Norse text that sounds like a game tooltip. In the Eddic poem Sigrdrífumál, the valkyrie Sigrdrífa teaches the hero Sigurd which runes to cut for which purpose. Stanza 6, in Henry Adams Bellows' 1936 translation:

Winning-runes learn, if thou longest to win, And the runes on thy sword-hilt write; Some on the furrow, and some on the flat, And twice shalt thou call on Tyr.

That is the nearest thing in Norse literature to a socketed rune: a sign on a weapon, chosen for victory. Many readers take "call on Tyr" as cutting the T-rune, Tiwaz, which carries the war god's name. Even here the rune is a letter. It has a sound, a name and a god behind it, and it could sit inside any word that needs a T.

The real runes, briefly

The Elder Futhark is an alphabet of 24 letters, used by Germanic peoples from roughly 150 to 800 CE and cut into wood, bone, metal and stone. Each letter is a sound, a name and a word at once. Fehu is F and cattle, the old measure of wealth. Algiz is Z and protection, as close as the futhark comes to a shield rune.

In Norse tradition the runes were won by Odin, who hung nine nights on Yggdrasil pierced by his own spear. People used them as charms, joined them into bindrunes and sigils that hold several meanings in one sign, and read them for guidance in a practice that continues today. A bindrune is the real version of a rune set: the letters combine, and you can still read each one.

Why fantasy worlds keep the word and drop the letters

None of the six games is set in the Norse world. Summoners War has its own sky arena, Guild Wars 2 its world of Tyria, Lost Ark the continent of Arkesia, Divinity its Rivellon, Lords of the Fallen its realm of Mournstead, and No Rest for the Wicked the island of Isola Sacra. A real alphabet would have no reason to be there.

Gear also needs something an alphabet cannot give: a sign you can read at a glance in a menu, with a clear number attached. "Rune" supplies the mood of something carved and old. The stat line supplies the rest.

The word took other roads too. In Diablo II runes became a rarity ladder spelling runewords, in The Witcher 3 socketed stones carry Slavic gods' names, and in League of Legends and Dota 2 they turned into perks and power-ups.

Want runes you can actually read?

Six games give you hundreds of runes, every one with a number on it. The Elder Futhark gives you 24, and each of them says something.

The easiest way in is to draw one. You can cast a free rune reading in your browser right now, using the genuine Elder Futhark and their traditional meanings, with a quick single draw for a fast question or a fuller spread for something weightier. Pull a rune of the day before your next grind and learn the futhark one sign at a time, or read how online rune readings work first. The rest of the series is on the runes in games hub, including Ragnarok Online, which borrows real rune names, and Valheim, the one game that uses the real futhark.

Your rune build changes with the next patch. A spearhead called "tester" has kept its name for 1,800 years. , free on iOS, Android, and the web, in English and Russian.

Frequently asked questions

Are gear runes in games real runes?

No. In Summoners War, Guild Wars 2, Lost Ark, Divinity: Original Sin 2, Lords of the Fallen and No Rest for the Wicked a rune is an item that adds a number or a skill to your equipment. None of them carries a sound or a letter, and none of them spells anything. The word is borrowed for its old, carved feel, not for its meaning.

Why do so many games call their gear runes?

Because the word already means a small carved sign with hidden power, and a socketed upgrade needs a name that sounds older than a gem. Guild Wars used it for armour upgrades in 2005, and later games followed. There is also a real echo: Germanic warriors did cut runes into spearheads and sword fittings, though those runes were words, not bonuses.

How do runes work in Summoners War?

Each monster has six rune slots. A rune has a star grade from 1 to 6, a rarity from Normal to Legendary, one main stat and up to four substats, and you power it up with Mana Stones as far as +15. Runes also belong to sets: four Violent runes give a 22% chance of an extra turn, two Energy runes give 15% more HP.

How do runes work in Guild Wars 2?

Runes are armour upgrades, one per armour piece, so a full set holds six. Bonuses unlock as you equip more runes of the same type: a Superior Rune of the Scholar gives +25 Power for one rune and +125 Ferocity at six. The weapon version is called a sigil, and a character carries up to two of them on each weapon set.

What are skill runes in Lost Ark?

A skill rune attaches to a single combat skill and changes how it behaves. You can equip one per skill and up to eight at once, swapping them freely. Galewind raises casting speed, Wealth fills the Speciality Meter faster, and Iron Wall and Protection add defence. Each comes in Uncommon, Rare, Epic and Legendary grades with growing values.

What do runes do in Divinity: Original Sin 2?

They socket into weapons, armour, amulets and rings, and the same rune does something different in each. A Small Flame Rune adds 9% fire damage to a weapon, 5% fire resistance to armour and 3% critical chance to jewellery. There are six types, Flame, Frost, Masterwork, Rock, Thunder and Venom, in Small, Medium, Large and Giant sizes.

How do runes work in Lords of the Fallen?

Runes go into weapons and shields, never armour. Upgrading an item opens up to three slots, and each slot has one of four shapes, Ativ, Velox, Devoth or Anarkos, tied to Strength, Agility, Radiance and Inferno. The blacksmith Gerlinde sells them once you bring her rune tablets. Atarux, for example, adds poison buildup to a weapon and poison resistance to a shield.

What are runes in No Rest for the Wicked?

They are the special attacks a weapon carries. Most weapons arrive with one already in place, and the enchanter Eleanor in Sacrament can move runes between weapons for free, although extracting a rune destroys the weapon it came from. Most runes spend Focus, which you build in combat: Fire Arrow costs 20 Focus and Arrowstorm costs 150.

Did Vikings put runes on their weapons?

People did long before the Vikings. The Øvre Stabu spearhead from Norway, dated about 160 to 250 CE, reads raunijaz, 'tester'. The Mos spearhead from Gotland reads gaois, 'the screamer'. In the 10th century an English smith cut the whole 28-letter futhorc into the Seax of Beagnoth. Such inscriptions were rare: 2 of 366 lance heads at Illerup carry one.

What did runes on real weapons say?

Mostly a name. Many early spearheads seem to name the weapon itself, with words like 'tester', 'router' and 'screamer', while others name the owner or the smith. Nothing in the record reads as a stat bonus. A rune on a real spear said what the spear was called, the way a ship or a sword in the sagas carried a name.

What are victory runes in Norse mythology?

In the Eddic poem Sigrdrífumál a valkyrie teaches the hero Sigurd 'winning-runes' and tells him to write them on his sword-hilt and call twice on Tyr. Many readers take that as carving the T-rune, Tiwaz, named after the war god. It is the closest Norse source to a gear rune, and it is still a letter with a name.

Is a socketed rune the same as a bindrune?

No. A socketed rune is a game item that adds a fixed bonus to a slot. A bindrune joins two or more real runes into one sign, so that their meanings combine, and people have cut them on objects for centuries. A bindrune can still be read letter by letter. A Lords of the Fallen rune or a Summoners War rune cannot.

Which games use real runes instead of gear runes?

Very few. Valheim writes English with genuine Elder Futhark letters on its runestones, which makes it the clearest case in our series. Ragnarok Online borrows real rune names such as Nauthiz and Isa but gives them invented powers. The six gear-rune games in this guide use neither real letters nor real names.

Where can I try a real rune reading online?

You can cast a free rune reading in your browser with the Way of the Runes rune-reading tool. It uses the genuine 24 Elder Futhark runes and their traditional meanings, with quick single draws for a fast question and fuller spreads for something weightier, and a full description for every rune.
