Are the Runes in Last Epoch Real?

No. Last Epoch's Heo, Rah and Gon runes spell by order, but they only spell 40 fixed spells: three letters and a closed dictionary, not an alphabet.

Last Epoch opened Season 5, Rage of the Frostborn, on 1 October 2026, and a new wave of players is rolling a Mage, picking the Runemaster mastery and watching three small runes appear above the character's head. Cast fire, a fire rune. Cast cold, a cold rune. Press Runic Invocation and the runes turn into a spell. Then the obvious question: is this real?

No. The runes in Last Epoch are three invented signs, Heo, Rah and Gon, that stand for cold, fire and lightning. They are not letters of the Elder Futhark or of any other script.

But Last Epoch deserves its own answer, because it comes closer to writing than any other game in this series. Diablo IV gave its runes grammar and no alphabet. The Runemaster does the opposite: it has a tiny alphabet whose order changes the meaning, the way letters do. Then it stops. Last Epoch built an alphabet of three letters and gave it a dictionary of forty words.

What is a rune in Last Epoch?

A rune in Last Epoch is a charge of one element that the Runemaster stores, up to three at a time. Every elemental skill you cast adds one: Heo for cold, Rah for fire, Gon for lightning. The names come from Eleventh Hour Games' own announcement. Runic Invocation then spends all the stored runes on one spell.

The Runemaster is the third mastery of the Mage class, next to the Sorcerer and the Spellblade. It arrived in the Runes of Power update, version 0.9.2, on 7 September 2023, five months before the game left early access with its 1.0 release on 21 February 2024. The developer describes the mastery's focus as "runes and area control".

A few skills belong to the Runemaster alone:

  • Rune Bolt fires cheap piercing projectiles and cycles fire, lightning, cold by default, so it can make all three runes by itself.
  • Glyph of Dominion marks a glyph on the ground that grows, damages enemies standing in it over time and then explodes.
  • Runic Invocation reads the stored runes and casts the matching spell.

The rune itself never does anything on its own. It waits in the queue until the invocation reads it.

How does Runic Invocation read the runes?

Runic Invocation reads three things about the stored runes: how many there are, which elements they are and in what order they arrived. Eleventh Hour Games advertises 40 invocations in total. Change any of the three and you get a different spell, which is the heart of the mastery.

Here are the invocations that the official announcement and Maxroll's guides name together with their order:

Runes, in orderElementsInvocationWhat it does
Rah, Rah, RahFire, fire, fireAergon's Greater FireballA massive fiery explosion
Gon, Rah, RahLightning, fire, fireHydrahedronSummons Hydrahedron, which "turns foes into ashes"
Heo, Rah, HeoCold, fire, coldReowyn's FrostguardAn explosive shell of regenerating Ward
Rah, Gon, HeoFire, lightning, coldAntipode of MesembriaA rune stone that Maxroll calls a "black hole" type spell

Look at the second and fourth rows. Both hold fire and lightning, and they cast nothing alike. Maxroll's reveal says the same about cold, fire, lightning against lightning, cold, fire: same three runes, different spell. Season 5 has not changed the rule. Maxroll's Hydrahedron build guide, updated on 28 September 2026 for Rage of the Frostborn, still opens with "Lightning, Fire, Fire".

Is the Runemaster's rune order a kind of spelling?

Half of it is. Spelling needs two things: a small set of signs, and meaning that depends on their order. The Runemaster has both. Gon, Rah, Rah and Rah, Gon, Rah are as different as "tab" and "bat". No other game in this series lets the same runes, in a different order, cast a different spell.

Compare it with the neighbours. In Diablo II, a runeword is a password: the stones go into a socketed item in a fixed order, and a wrong order simply fails. In Diablo IV, each rune is a whole word, a "when" or a "then". In Last Epoch, each rune is closer to a letter. Heo alone means cold. Heo in third place, after Rah and Gon, becomes the last part of a different spell.

This is also how real runic writing works. The Elder Futhark has 24 letters, and their order makes the word. One of the oldest long inscriptions, on the gold horn found at Gallehus in Denmark and dated to the early 5th century, reads ek hlewagastiz holtijaz horna tawido: "I, Hlewagastiz Holtijaz, made the horn." Reorder those letters and the smith's name is gone.

So the Runemaster gets the first half of spelling right. The second half is where it stops.

Can you write new words with Last Epoch runes?

No. An alphabet is an open system and a dictionary is a closed one, and Last Epoch has a dictionary. Do the arithmetic. Three rune types in strings of one, two or three runes give 3, 9 and 27 combinations: 39 ordered strings, and Eleventh Hour Games counts 40 invocations. Every one of them was designed, named and balanced by the studio before you cast it. There is no fourth rune and no fourth place in the queue. If you want a spell that is not on the list, the alphabet cannot write it.

The Elder Futhark has no such ceiling. Its 24 letters make 13,824 possible three-letter strings before you reach a single four-letter one, and nothing stops a carver at three. Hlewagastiz alone is eleven letters long. The real alphabet was never a list of permitted words. It wrote whatever the carver said: a name, a gift, a curse, a boast, a line of verse.

That is why the Runemaster feels like a combo system rather than a language, and why Maxroll's reveal compares it to Invoker from Dota 2 and to Magicka, both games about mixing elements into spells, not to any script. It is a clever rune puzzle, and still a puzzle with a fixed answer key.

There is one more difference, and it is the deepest one. Each of the Runemaster's runes means an element. Each futhark letter writes a sound. Heo is always cold. The futhark's Isa is named "ice", but it writes the sound I in any word, warm or cold, and that freedom is what lets 24 signs say everything.

The real runes, briefly

The Elder Futhark is the oldest runic alphabet: 24 letters in three rows of eight, used by Germanic peoples from roughly 150 to 800 CE and cut into wood, bone, stone and metal. The name comes from its first six letters, f, u, th, a, r and k. Each rune has a sound, a name and a meaning: Fehu is f and cattle, Kenaz is k and a torch.

Some of those names do sound elemental. Kenaz is a torch, Isa is ice and Hagalaz is hail. But the futhark has no lightning rune, and the elemental names were chosen because each word begins with the rune's own sound. Write the Runemaster's names in real runes and each becomes an ordinary three-letter word: Rah is Raido, Ansuz and Hagalaz.

Real runes did carry more than sound. In Norse tradition, Odin wins them through sacrifice, hanging nine nights on Yggdrasil, pierced by his own spear. Afterwards they served as charms and protections, combined into bindrunes and sigils, and read for guidance in a practice that continues today. The magic sat on top of the writing, never in place of it.

Why Eterra has no room for real runes

Last Epoch is set in Eterra, an original world. In the Steam page's words, you "travel through the world of Eterra's past and face dark empires, wrathful gods and untouched wilds" to "save time itself from The Void". The names in the invocations, Aergon, Reowyn and Mesembria, belong to that invented world. The Runemaster announcement calls the mastery a savant who weaves "the power of the raw arcane", and it names no Norse or Germanic source.

That makes invented runes the honest choice. A borrowed futhark letter would have had to carry a sound nobody in Eterra speaks. Three new signs, one per element, fit the game's three damage types exactly, and making order count gave the mastery its depth. Eleventh Hour Games did not need an alphabet. It needed forty spells, and it built the smallest alphabet that could hold them.

Want runes you can actually read?

The Runemaster gives you three runes and forty answers, all written in advance. The Elder Futhark gives you 24 letters and no answer key at all.

The easiest way to meet them is to draw one. You can cast a free rune reading in your browser right now, using the genuine Elder Futhark and their traditional meanings, with a quick single draw for a fast question or a fuller spread for something weightier. If you would rather learn slowly, pull a rune of the day each morning and learn the futhark one sign at a time, or read how online rune readings work first. The rest of the series is on the runes in games hub, including Diablo II, Diablo IV, Path of Exile 2, and our look at why so many games call their gear runes.

If you came here from Dota 2, Invoker is the hero Maxroll compared the Runemaster to, but the things Dota itself calls runes are something else: power-ups that appear on the river. See Why do League of Legends and Dota 2 call them runes?.

Your Runic Invocation knows forty spells, and you can learn them all in a season. The futhark has been answering new questions for about 1,800 years. , free on iOS, Android, and the web, in English and Russian.

Frequently asked questions

Are the runes in Last Epoch real runes?

No. The three runes of Last Epoch's Runemaster, Heo for cold, Rah for fire and Gon for lightning, are invented. Eleventh Hour Games made them up for the world of Eterra, and none of them is a letter of the Elder Futhark or any other historical script. They do behave more like letters than most game runes, because their order changes what they mean.

What are Heo, Rah and Gon in Last Epoch?

They are the Runemaster's three rune types. Eleventh Hour Games' own announcement says Heo, Rah and Gon represent cold, fire and lightning respectively. Each time the Runemaster casts an elemental skill, a rune of that element appears above the character's head, up to three at once. Runic Invocation then spends them to cast a spell chosen by their order.

How does Runic Invocation work in Last Epoch?

Runic Invocation consumes the runes you are holding and casts one spell chosen by their number, type and order. Three fire runes cast Aergon's Greater Fireball. Lightning, fire, fire summons Hydrahedron. Cold, fire, cold gives Reowyn's Frostguard, a shell of regenerating Ward. The same three elements in a different order produce a different spell, which is why players plan their casts in sequence.

How many Runic Invocations are there in Last Epoch?

Forty. Eleventh Hour Games announced the Runemaster in August 2023 with 40 invocations, and Maxroll's reveal gives the same number. Three rune types in strings of one, two or three runes give 39 ordered combinations, and the game lists 40 spells. Every one of them was named and designed in advance, so the list is closed: no player can invent a 41st.

Does rune order matter in Last Epoch?

Yes, completely. Maxroll's Runemaster reveal states that cold, fire, lightning and lightning, cold, fire cast different spells, even though they hold the same three runes. Gon, Rah, Rah summons Hydrahedron, while Rah, Rah, Rah casts Aergon's Greater Fireball. Order matters in real runic writing for the same reason: the same letters in another order spell another word.

What is the Runemaster in Last Epoch?

The Runemaster is the third mastery of the Mage class, next to the Sorcerer and the Spellblade. It arrived in the Runes of Power update, version 0.9.2, on 7 September 2023, five months before the full release. Its design focus is runes and area control: it generates runes with elemental skills and spends them on Runic Invocation.

What does Rune Bolt do in Last Epoch?

Rune Bolt is a cheap Runemaster spell that fires piercing projectiles and cycles through fire, lightning and cold by default, so it generates all three runes on its own. Maxroll's reveal notes that invoking that default fire, lightning, cold string gives a black hole type spell. The forum names Rah, Gon, Heo as the Antipode of Mesembria.

What is Glyph of Dominion in Last Epoch?

Glyph of Dominion is a Runemaster skill that places a glyph on the ground. The glyph grows, deals damage over time to enemies standing in it and then explodes. Its skill tree can turn it into a support zone instead, granting allies Ward and resistances. It is a glyph in the fantasy sense, a magic circle, and carries no letters you can read.

Is Last Epoch based on Norse mythology?

No. Last Epoch is set in Eterra, an original world whose past you travel through to save time itself from The Void, facing dark empires and wrathful gods on the way. The names in its invocations, such as Aergon, Reowyn and Mesembria, belong to that world. Neither the Steam page nor the Runemaster announcement cites any Norse or Germanic source.

When did Last Epoch come out?

Last Epoch entered Steam early access on 30 April 2019 and left it with the 1.0 release on 21 February 2024. It is developed by Eleventh Hour Games, and Steam lists Eleventh Hour Games and KRAFTON as publishers. Season 5, Rage of the Frostborn, began on 1 October 2026 with the Morditas boss and new skills for three masteries.

Is the Runemaster like Invoker from Dota 2?

Yes, and Maxroll's Runemaster reveal makes that comparison itself, along with the game Magicka. All three are combination systems: a small set of elemental signs mapped onto a fixed list of named spells. In Last Epoch the signs are Heo, Rah and Gon, and their order counts as well as their mix, which gives the Runemaster 40 invocations to learn.

Do real runes have elements like fire and ice?

Some rune names do. In the Elder Futhark, Kenaz is a torch, Isa is ice and Hagalaz is hail. But those names were chosen because they begin with the sound the rune writes, K, I and H. Isa writes the letter I in any word, warm or cold. The meaning sits in the name, while the job of the rune is the sound.

What would the Runemaster's runes look like as real runes?

Spelled in the Elder Futhark, the names become ordinary words. Heo needs three letters: Hagalaz, Ehwaz and Othala. Rah needs Raido, Ansuz and Hagalaz. Gon needs Gebo, Othala and Nauthiz. That is the real difference: in Last Epoch each name is one rune, while in the futhark each name is a word built from runes, as any name would be.

Where can I try a real rune reading online?

You can cast a free rune reading in your browser with the Way of the Runes rune-reading tool. It uses the genuine 24 Elder Futhark runes and their traditional meanings, with quick single draws for a fast question and fuller spreads for something weightier, and a full description for every rune.
