Are the Runes in Path of Exile 2 Real?

No. Path of Exile 2's runes are stat stones named for ice, storms and iron. The real futhark used names like that too, but only to carry a sound.

Path of Exile 2 leaves early access on 11 December 2026 and turns free-to-play the same day, two years after its paid launch. A wave of new exiles is about to put an Artificer's Orb on a sword, drop a small stone disc called a Desert Rune into the new socket, and watch a blue glyph light up. Then they ask whether that glyph means anything.

No. The runes in Path of Exile 2 are permanent stat stones with invented glyphs, not letters. None of them carries a sound, and nothing on them can be read.

What makes Path of Exile 2 worth its own answer is that it gets closer to the real thing than most games in this series, in one surprising place: the names. Glacial, Storm, Desert, Iron, Stone. The real futhark also named its runes after ice, hail, sun and men. Path of Exile 2 names its runes the way the futhark did, then drops the one thing the names were for: the sound.

What is a rune in Path of Exile 2?

A rune in Path of Exile 2 is an augment, a small stone you place into a socket on a weapon or a piece of armour to add one fixed bonus. The bonus depends on the item: a Desert Rune adds fire damage to a sword, extra fire damage to a staff and fire resistance to a chest piece.

Everything else follows from that slot.

  • Sockets come from an Artificer's Orb. Body armour and two-handed weapons take two; helmets, gloves, boots, shields and one-handed weapons take one. A Vaal Orb can force one more, at the price of corrupting the item.
  • Tiers run Lesser, normal, Greater and Perfect. Three runes of one kind and tier make one of the next at the Reforging Bench.
  • Numbers climb with the tier. A Desert Rune in armour gives 14% fire resistance, a Greater one 18%, a Perfect one 22%. A Body Rune gives 45, 60 or 75 life.
  • Named runes, such as Thane Grannell's, Lady Hestra's or Saqawal's, carry stronger effects and are limited to one per item.

Runes share their sockets with rarer augments: Soul Cores from the Trial of Chaos, Idols, and Abyssal Eyes. The datamined item list counts 64 rune items, and the 0.5 update, Return of the Ancients, added more than a hundred runes and crafting items on 29 May 2026.

Why are Path of Exile 2 runes named after ice and storms?

Because each name tells you what the rune adds. Glacial means cold, Storm means lightning, Desert means fire, Body means life. The name is a label for an effect, so a player can read the stash tab at a glance and know which stone fixes which resistance.

Here is the surprise. The real Elder Futhark has names drawn from the same world of weather and bodies:

Path of Exile 2 runeWhat it addsElder Futhark rune with a similar nameWhat that name was for
Glacial RuneCold damage or cold resistanceIsa, iceThe sound I
Storm RuneLightning damage or resistanceHagalaz, hailThe sound H
Desert RuneFire damage or fire resistanceSowilo, sunThe sound S
Body RuneLifeMannaz, humanThe sound M

Read the right-hand column. In the futhark, a rune name is a common word that begins with the rune's own sound. Isa starts with I, hagalaz with H, sowilo with S. The name was a memory aid, the way a child learns "A is for apple". Ice was not what Isa did. Ice was how you remembered that the single straight stroke ᛁ said I.

Path of Exile 2 keeps the ice and throws away the I. Its Glacial Rune has a name and an effect and no sound at all, so it can never sit next to another rune and make a word. That is the whole difference between a label and a letter.

Can you remove a rune in Path of Exile 2?

No. The rune's own tooltip says that once socketed it cannot be retrieved, only replaced by another augment, and replacing it destroys the old one. The only way back is an Orb of Extraction, which destroys the item to save the rune.

This is the second place the game lands near the real thing, and it is a good design choice. Most games in this series let you pull a gear rune out and swap it freely. Path of Exile 2 makes socketing a decision you live with.

Real runes were permanent too. They were cut into bone, wood, metal and stone, and the oldest survivors are about 1,800 years old. But they were made permanent so they could be read later: a maker's name, a memorial, a short blessing. A socketed Desert Rune is permanent so you think twice before spending it. One kind of permanence keeps a message. The other keeps a resistance.

What do the glyphs on Path of Exile 2 runes mean?

Nothing that can be read. Each rune icon is a dark stone disc with one glowing blue sign cut in straight lines, and none of those signs is one of the 24 Elder Futhark letters. They are invented ornaments drawn in a runic style, and each one identifies an item, not a sound.

The style is well chosen. Real runes avoid curves and horizontal lines because they were cut across the grain of wood, and the Path of Exile 2 glyphs follow the same rule: every stroke is straight. But look closer and the shapes give themselves away. The fire rune's sign is a box with a triangle in it; the cold rune's is a triangle crossed at two corners. Real runes are single, simple marks. These are compounds, closer to a bindrune or sigil than to a letter.

The 0.5 league, Runes of Aldur, pushes the idea furthest. A young blacksmith called Farrow revives Ezomyte runesmithing: you fill ancient stone Remnants covered in runic inscriptions with your runes, and the craft draws on Verisium, a metal that shapes reality when runes are etched onto it. It is the most runic system in any game on this site, and it is still one where writing a rune changes the world instead of saying something about it.

The real runes, briefly

The Elder Futhark is a 24-letter alphabet, named after its first six letters, used by Germanic peoples from roughly 150 to 800 CE and cut into wood, bone, metal and stone. Every letter has three things at once: a shape, a sound and a name, and the name is a word such as Fehu, cattle, or Kenaz, torch.

The names survive mainly through the medieval rune poems of Norway, Iceland and England, which give each rune a short verse. Ice gets a line about how cold and slippery it is; hail gets one calling it the whitest of grain. Those verses are where the meanings used in divination today come from.

In Norse tradition the runes were won by Odin, who hung nine nights on Yggdrasil to take them up. From there they served as charms and protections, and they are still drawn for guidance today.

Why Wraeclast has no room for real runes

Wraeclast is Grinding Gear Games' own continent, and its peoples borrow loosely from real cultures: the Ezomytes are Celtic-inspired, the Vaal Aztec-inspired, the Karui Polynesian-inspired. No Norse gods, no Yggdrasil, no Eddas. A Germanic alphabet would have no one to belong to.

There is one real script hidden in the map, and it is not runic. Act 1 runs through Ogham village, the Ogham farmlands and Ogham Manor, where Count Geonor waits. Ogham is a real alphabet: twenty letters cut as strokes across the edge of a standing stone, used for early Irish from about the 4th century AD, found mostly in Ireland and Wales.

So the Celtic-inspired people of Path of Exile 2 live in a place named after the actual Celtic alphabet, and practise a craft the game calls runesmithing, which the lore traces to the Kalguurans. The history ran the other way: the Irish had Ogham, and the Germanic peoples had runes. Grinding Gear Games picked the right name for a Celtic village. It just never put the letters on the stones.

Want runes you can actually read?

Path of Exile 2 gives you dozens of stones that do one thing each, sockets you cannot undo, and a reforging bench to climb from Lesser to Perfect. The Elder Futhark gives you 24 signs that say things, and once you know them you can read every runestone ever cut.

The quickest way in is to draw one. You can cast a free rune reading in your browser right now, using the genuine Elder Futhark and their traditional meanings, with a single draw for a quick question or a fuller spread for something weightier. To learn the letters slowly, pull a rune of the day each morning, or read how online rune readings work first.

Path of Exile 2 is a descendant of Diablo II, whose 33 socketed runes climb a three-into-one ladder of their own, and a cousin of Diablo IV, whose runes form a tiny grammar. The rest of the series is on the runes in games hub, including Valheim, the one game that uses the real futhark.

Grinding Gear Games gave its runes the right kind of names and made them last, which is more than most studios manage. The letter inside the name is still missing, and it has been waiting since the 2nd century. , free on iOS, Android, and the web, in English and Russian.

Frequently asked questions

Are the runes in Path of Exile 2 real runes?

No. The runes in Path of Exile 2 are socketable stones that add a fixed bonus, such as fire resistance or extra life, to a weapon or a piece of armour. Each carries one invented glowing glyph, and none of those glyphs is a letter of the Elder Futhark or of any other alphabet. Nothing on them can be read.

What do runes do in Path of Exile 2?

A rune goes into an empty socket on a martial weapon, a wand, a staff or a piece of armour and adds one modifier, which changes with the item type. A Desert Rune adds fire damage to a sword, extra fire damage to a staff and fire resistance to armour. Body Runes add life, Iron Runes physical damage or defences.

How do you add sockets for runes in Path of Exile 2?

With an Artificer's Orb, which adds one socket to an item. Ten Artificer's Shards, salvaged from socketed gear at the Salvage Bench, make one orb. Body armour and two-handed weapons hold two sockets, while helmets, gloves, boots, shields, foci and one-handed weapons hold one. A Vaal Orb can add one more, but it corrupts the item.

Can you remove a rune in Path of Exile 2?

No. The rune's own tooltip says that once it is socketed it cannot be retrieved, only replaced by another augment, and replacing it destroys the old rune. The one way to get a rune back is an Orb of Extraction, which destroys the item and returns the augment intact. A socketed rune is a commitment, not a loan.

How do you upgrade runes in Path of Exile 2?

At the Reforging Bench: three runes of the same kind and tier make one of the next tier. Common runes come as Lesser, normal from item level 15, Greater from 30 and Perfect from 50. A Desert Rune in armour gives 14% fire resistance at normal tier, 18% at Greater and 22% at Perfect. Endgame runes cannot be upgraded this way.

What is the best rune in Path of Exile 2?

It depends on the slot and the build, which is the honest answer the game is designed around. For most armour, Body Runes for life and the three elemental runes for resistances do the most work early. On martial weapons, Iron Runes for physical damage are the usual pick. Named runes such as Thane Grannell's are limited to one per item.

What is the difference between runes and Soul Cores in Path of Exile 2?

Both are augments that go into the same sockets, but they come from different places and differ in power. Runes drop everywhere and stack in tiers. Soul Cores come mainly from the Trial of Chaos, carry Vaal names such as Soul Core of Ticaba, and are stronger and rarer, many limited to one per character. Idols and Abyssal Eyes are further augment types.

What is Runesmithing in Path of Exile 2?

The crafting system of the Runes of Aldur league, added in the 0.5 update Return of the Ancients on 29 May 2026. A young blacksmith called Farrow revives Ezomyte runesmithing: you fill the slots of ancient stone Remnants with runes to create an item, and doing so wakes the undead buried nearby, empowered by the same runes you used.

Are the glyphs on Path of Exile 2 runes Elder Futhark?

No, though they look closer than most. Each rune icon is a carved stone disc with one glowing blue sign made of straight strokes, the way real runes were cut. But the signs are compounds of triangles, boxes and crossed lines, and none of them matches any of the 24 Elder Futhark letters. They are invented decoration with a runic style.

Why are Path of Exile 2 runes named Glacial, Storm and Desert?

Because each name tells you the element the rune adds: Glacial for cold, Storm for lightning, Desert for fire. Real rune names worked the other way. Isa means ice and Hagalaz means hail, but those words were chosen because they begin with the sound the rune writes, I and H. The name was a memory aid for a letter.

Is Ogham in Path of Exile 2 a real alphabet?

Yes. In the game Ogham is the Ezomyte village, farmland and manor of Act 1, ruled by Count Geonor. In history Ogham is an early medieval alphabet of twenty letters, cut as strokes across the edge of a standing stone, mainly in Ireland and Wales, from about the 4th century AD. The game borrows the name, not the script.

Is Path of Exile 2 based on Norse mythology?

No. Wraeclast is Grinding Gear Games' own world. Its peoples are modelled loosely on real cultures: the Ezomytes are Celtic-inspired, the Vaal Aztec-inspired and the Karui Polynesian-inspired. There are no Norse gods, no Yggdrasil and no Eddas. The runes are a craft of the Ezomytes and, in the game's lore, of the older Kalguurans before them.

When does Path of Exile 2 fully release?

On 11 December 2026, when it leaves early access and becomes free-to-play, according to Grinding Gear Games' announcement of 25 August 2026. Early access began on 6 December 2024 at 29.99 US dollars on Steam. Press and fans call the full launch version 1.0, and it follows four major early access updates, from Dawn of the Hunt to Return of the Ancients.
