RuneScape: Dragonwilds left Early Access on 15 September 2026 and reached PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2 the same day. A new crowd of players is meeting the oldest habit in Gielinor: you do not learn a spell, you pay for it. Point a staff, cast, and a few small stones called runes disappear from your pack. So the question comes up: are these real runes?
No. The runes in RuneScape are spell ammunition, not letters. Every cast spends them, and not one of them stands for a sound.
That makes RuneScape the plainest case in this series. Elden Ring turned runes into money and Gothic 2 into permanent spell plates. RuneScape, the game with the word in its title, made them the one thing an alphabet can never be: something you use up. A RuneScape rune is spent the moment you use it. A real rune was cut so it would not be.
What is a rune in RuneScape?
A rune in RuneScape is a small stone that pays for a spell. You carry runes in stacks of hundreds or thousands, and almost every spell in the Magic skill has a price in them. Old School RuneScape lists 23 rune types and RuneScape 3 lists 26, each marked with one emblem so you can tell them apart.
They fall into three families:
- Elemental runes: air, water, earth and fire, plus sunfire in Old School. They supply the element of a spell.
- Catalytic runes: mind, body, cosmic, chaos, nature, law, death, astral, blood and soul, plus wrath in Old School and armadyl and time in RuneScape 3. They set the strength or kind of spell.
- Combination runes: mist, dust, mud, smoke, steam and lava, each counting as two elemental runes, and in Old School aether, which counts as cosmic and soul.
You get runes from shops and monsters, or you make them with the Runecraft skill, added on 29 March 2004. You mine rune essence, carry it to an altar hidden inside a ruin, open the ruin with the matching talisman, and bind the essence into runes. At level 99 one pure essence becomes ten air runes. By 1 October 2026, 128,478 Old School players had reached 99 Runecraft.
The word also does a second job. "Rune" is the short name for runite, the blue metal behind rune armour and the rune scimitar, which needs level 85 Mining to dig. In RuneScape the word names a bullet and a quality grade, and never a letter.
Why is a RuneScape rune ammunition, not a letter?
Because the game prices every spell in runes and takes the payment on each cast. The Old School wiki is blunt about it: all spells except the Home Teleports "require the use of runes as a consumed resource". Here is what a few casts cost.
| Spell | Runes spent per cast | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Wind Strike | 1 air, 1 mind | 2 |
| Fire Strike | 2 air, 3 fire, 1 mind | 6 |
| Wind Wave | 5 air, 1 blood | 6 |
| Varrock Teleport | 3 air, 1 fire, 1 law | 5 |
| High Level Alchemy | 5 fire, 1 nature | 6 |
| Fire Surge | 7 air, 10 fire, 1 wrath | 18 |
Read down the middle column and you are reading an ammunition chart. More power costs more stones, the rarer catalyst decides the tier, and an elemental staff works like an endless magazine for one element. Dragonwilds keeps the idea and drops the pretence: its wiki lists air, water and fire runes as "magical ammunition" for staves.
A letter does not work this way. Write the word fire a thousand times and the letter F is still there for the next word. Writing does not spend its signs; it reuses them. That is why 24 letters were enough for every runic inscription ever cut, and why a RuneScape mage needs a fresh fire rune for every bolt.
The real runes were made for the opposite job. The Øvre Stabu spearhead, from a grave in Norway, was cut about 160 to 250 CE with the word raunijaz, "tester". It is still readable after 1,800 years. A RuneScape rune lasts one cast. A real rune was cut to outlast the carver.
Are combination runes like bindrunes?
They look like the nearest thing in the game. A mist rune pays for an air rune and a water rune at once; a lava rune for earth and fire. Two runes in one stone sounds like a bindrune, the real technique of joining two or more runes into a single sign.
The difference is what survives the joining. In a bindrune each letter is still there: a reader can pick the runes out of the shared stave and read them one by one. That is the point of making one, and you can see how it works in our guide to runic sigils.
A combination rune keeps nothing to read. It is a new stone with its own emblem, it pays for two elements, and the next spell spends both halves together. The game combines runes the way a shop combines coins into a larger note: the value adds up, the letters were never there.
Why won't the Fremennik make runes?
Here is the part of RuneScape that comes closest to the real north. The Fremennik live in the cold Fremennik Province, mostly in the town of Rellekka. Most of them carry names with Old Norse roots, they believe in Valhalla, and they wait for an "End of Things" that plays the part of Ragnarok.
And they are the one people in Gielinor who will not make runes. Most Fremennik believe runes should come only from the gods, so crafting them is wrong. They fell out with the Moon Clan of Lunar Isle over runecrafting, and a faction later launched the Runecrafting Crusades to destroy runic altars. Even in Rellekka, some see the village seer's magic as an affront to the gods.
The lore has a reason for the feeling. In RuneScape the first runestones were made by the god Guthix with an artefact called the Stone of Jas, and only much later did a seer called V find that stone, discover rune essence in the rock around it and build the first altars.
Real Norse tradition also gave the runes a divine origin: Odin wins them by hanging nine nights on Yggdrasil. But what he wins is a script, and people went on to cut it on spearheads and memorial stones. RuneScape gave its Vikings the reverence for runes and took away the writing.

The real runes, briefly
The real runes are the Elder Futhark, an alphabet of 24 letters used by Germanic peoples from roughly 150 to 800 CE. Each letter is a sound, a name and a word at once: Fehu is cattle and wealth, Ansuz a god, Uruz the wild ox. In the Viking Age the row shrank to the 16 letters of the Younger Futhark, the script on the runestones of Scandinavia.
Beyond writing, runes served as charms and protections, were joined into bindrunes, and were read for guidance in a practice that continues today. In Norse tradition they are a gift won at a price, which is the one idea RuneScape's Fremennik kept.
Why Gielinor has no room for real runes
RuneScape started in January 2001 as a browser game made by Andrew Gower with his brother Paul, and its world was always its own: Gielinor, its gods Guthix, Saradomin and Zamorak, the Wizards' Tower, the Wilderness. Jagex reports more than 300 million accounts across the franchise, and none of them ever needed to read a runic letter.
Ammunition was the right design for an MMO. A stone that is spent gives every spell a running cost, gives Runecraft something to sell, and gives every bank tab a reason to fill up. A real alphabet could do none of that, because a letter you have learned stays learned.
What the game leaves out is everything the real runes did beyond their shapes: names on weapons, memorials for the dead, and draws for a question asked in earnest.
Want runes you can actually read?
RuneScape gives you runes that do something once. The Elder Futhark gives you 24 that say something, again and again, and you never run out.
The easiest way in is to draw one. You can cast a free rune reading in your browser right now, using the genuine Elder Futhark and their traditional meanings, with a quick single draw for a fast question or a fuller spread for something weightier. If you would rather build the habit slowly, pull a rune of the day each morning and learn the futhark one sign at a time, or read how online rune readings work first. The rest of the series is on the runes in games hub, including Ragnarok Online, another MMO whose runestones are used up on every cast, and the games that call their gear runes.
A RuneScape mage spends thousands of runes and keeps none of them. The 24 real ones cost nothing to keep, and they have outlived every carver who cut them. , free on iOS, Android, and the web, in English and Russian.
Frequently asked questions
Are the runes in RuneScape real runes?
No. RuneScape's runes are small stones that act as spell ammunition: you carry a stack, cast a spell, and the runes it needs vanish from your inventory. None of them is a letter or carries a sound. The real runes are the 24 letters of the Elder Futhark, used from roughly 150 to 800 CE, and nothing in Gielinor is written with them.
What are runes used for in RuneScape?
Casting spells. Every spell has a rune price paid on each cast. Wind Strike costs one air rune and one mind rune, Fire Strike two air, three fire and one mind, and Varrock Teleport three air, one fire and one law. Only the Home Teleports in Old School RuneScape are free. An elemental staff can stand in for one element's runes.
How many types of runes are in Old School RuneScape?
Twenty-three, by the Old School RuneScape Wiki's count: five elemental runes (air, water, earth, fire and sunfire), eleven catalytic runes (mind, body, cosmic, chaos, nature, law, death, astral, blood, soul and wrath) and seven combination runes (mist, dust, mud, smoke, steam, lava and aether). The newest, aether, arrived on 14 May 2025 and counts as a cosmic and a soul rune.
How many rune types are in RuneScape 3?
Twenty-six standard types on the RuneScape Wiki: four elemental, twelve catalytic, six combination and four necrotic. The catalytic list adds armadyl and time runes to the Old School set, and the necrotic runes (spirit, bone, flesh and miasma) power the Necromancy skill. Two more minigame runes bring the total to twenty-eight. The Elder Futhark has had 24 letters throughout.
How do you make runes in RuneScape?
With the Runecraft skill. You mine rune essence or pure essence, carry it to a runic altar, and bind it into runes. Most altars sit inside mysterious ruins that open only with the matching talisman or tiara. At higher levels one essence yields several runes: at level 99 Runecraft, a single pure essence makes ten air runes.
When was Runecraft added to RuneScape?
On 29 March 2004, with the launch of RuneScape 2. The same update added the Rune Mysteries quest, in which Duke Horacio of Lumbridge hands you an air talisman to carry to Archmage Sedridor at the Wizards' Tower. Completing it lets you mine rune essence. RuneScape itself first launched on 4 January 2001.
What are combination runes in RuneScape?
Runes that count as two kinds at once. A mist rune pays for one air and one water rune, dust for air and earth, mud for water and earth, smoke for air and fire, steam for water and fire, and lava for earth and fire. They exist to save inventory space. Aether, added in 2025, combines cosmic and soul.
Are RuneScape combination runes like bindrunes?
Only on the surface. A bindrune joins two or more real runes into one sign, and a reader can still pick out each letter inside it. A RuneScape combination rune also joins two runes, but the result is a new stone with its own emblem, and both parts are spent together on the next cast. Nothing inside it can be read.
What does rune mean in rune armour and rune scimitars?
A metal grade. In RuneScape, rune is short for runite, a blue ore that needs level 85 Mining to dig and level 85 Smithing to smelt, with eight coal per bar in a normal furnace. Rune armour and weapons are the tier-50 melee set. That use of the word has nothing to do with spells and nothing to do with letters.
Do runes work the same way in RuneScape: Dragonwilds?
Mostly. Dragonwilds, Jagex's survival game, entered Steam Early Access on 15 April 2025 and reached its full release on 15 September 2026. Its air, water and fire runes are magical ammunition for staves and wands, crafted from rune essence through Runecrafting. They weigh nothing and you keep them when you die. A level-20 perk saves runes 30% of the time.
Are the Fremennik in RuneScape based on the Vikings?
Loosely. The Fremennik of Rellekka carry names with Old Norse roots and believe in Valhalla and in an End of Things modelled on Ragnarok. They are also the one culture in the game that refuses to craft runes. Most Fremennik hold that runes should come only from the gods, and in their history a faction destroyed runic altars.
Is RuneScape based on Norse mythology?
No. RuneScape is set on Gielinor, a world shaped by its own gods: Guthix, Saradomin, Zamorak, Armadyl and others. In the lore Guthix made the first runestones with an artefact called the Stone of Jas. Norse ideas appear only in the Fremennik Province, and even there they are names and afterlife beliefs, not the Eddas, Odin or a runic alphabet.
Can you read the symbols on RuneScape runes?
No, because there is nothing to read. Each rune type carries a single emblem that identifies it in your inventory, the way an icon identifies an app. The emblems never combine into words and stand for no sounds. In the real Elder Futhark each sign is a letter with a sound and a name, so a row of runes spells something.
Where can I try a real rune reading online?
You can cast a free rune reading in your browser with the Way of the Runes rune-reading tool. It uses the genuine 24 Elder Futhark runes and their traditional meanings, with quick single draws for a fast question and fuller spreads for something weightier, and a full description for every rune. It works on any device, in English and Russian.
Which rune are you?
Seven questions, about a minute, and you get one of the 24 Elder Futhark runes. The scoring is shown as you answer. Free, no signup.
