Elden Ring turned four on 25 February 2026, reached Nintendo Switch 2 on 28 August 2026, and has an A24 film directed by Alex Garland set for 3 March 2028. Every new Tarnished learns the same lesson in the first hour: kill anything, pocket its golden runes, die, and run back to the spot where the whole pile is waiting. Then they take Godrick's Great Rune and wonder whether any of this is real.
No. The runes in Elden Ring are money, experience and shards of an invented god-object, not letters. Not one of them carries a sound, and nothing in the game is written with them.
Most games on this site use runes as spells or stones in a socket. Elden Ring does something stranger: it turns the word for an alphabet into a currency. And the choice lands closer to the real futhark than it looks, because the first letter of the Elder Futhark, Fehu, means cattle, and cattle meant wealth. Elden Ring's runes and the real ones share exactly one idea, and it is money.

What is a rune in Elden Ring?
A rune in Elden Ring is currency and experience in one number. You spend runes at merchants for weapons, spells and items, and you spend the same runes at a Site of Grace to raise one of eight attributes, once Melina has given you her accord. Every level costs more than the last: reaching the maximum level of 713 takes 1,692,566,842 runes in total.
The loop around them is the heart of the game. Die, and you drop every rune you carry where you fell. Get back and touch the glow and they are yours again. Die on the way and they are gone. A Sacrificial Twig breaks in their place, once.
Runes also come in solid form, as consumables you crush for their value:
- Golden Rune [1]: "Use to gain 200 runes." The series climbs to 10,000 at [13].
- Numen's Rune: 12,500.
- Hero's Rune [1] to [5]: 15,000 to 35,000.
- Lord's Rune: 50,000.
- Marika's Rune (Shadow of the Erdtree): 80,000.
The lore gives the reason. Runes are pieces of the shattered Elden Ring itself, the grace of the Erdtree broken into countable shards. Your rune total is a count of fragments of a broken god. It is a wonderful idea, and it is an idea about power you can spend, not about writing.
What are the Great Runes in Elden Ring?
The Great Runes are the largest shards of the Elden Ring, held by Queen Marika's demigod children after the Shattering. Each one sits in a single boss. Take it, restore it at its Divine Tower, then use a Rune Arc to switch its blessing on until you die. You need two of them before Leyndell, Royal Capital, will let you in.

Godrick's item text is typical: "A Great Rune of the shardbearer Godrick. Its blessing raises all attributes." That is a stat, described in the language of a relic. Shadow of the Erdtree adds an eighth, Miquella's Great Rune, and its text admits it has kept almost nothing: only the power to resist charms.
Why is an Elden Ring rune not a letter?
Because in Elden Ring a rune is a law, not a sound. The clearest proof is the Rune of Death, which the game also calls Destined Death. It governs when living things die. Queen Marika pulled it out of the Elden Ring to found the Golden Order and gave it to Maliketh to guard, and Ranni stole a fragment of it for the Night of the Black Knives. Death itself is a rune here. Remove it and nothing in the world dies of old age.
No alphabet works like that. Take the letter d out of English and people keep dying; you just cannot write the word. A letter has no power over the thing it spells. It stands for a sound, and the sound only means something inside a word.
Elden Ring's idea of runes has a clear ancestor, and it is not Scandinavian. Hidetaka Miyazaki named the tabletop game RuneQuest, first published by Chaosium in 1978, among his story influences. In RuneQuest's world of Glorantha, runes are cosmic powers such as fire, and characters are attuned to them to cast magic. Runes as the building blocks of reality: that is the Lands Between, and it comes from a 1970s role-playing game, not from a Viking Age runestone.
The Great Runes' emblems make the same point on screen. Each is a single unique design for a single demigod, recognised by its whole shape like a coat of arms. None breaks down into letters, and none can be read aloud.
Why does the first real rune mean wealth?
Here is where Elden Ring stumbles into real history. The Elder Futhark opens with Fehu, and its name means cattle, the main measure of wealth for the early Germanic peoples. The sound is f. The name is money.
All three medieval rune poems gloss Fehu as wealth, and each adds a warning:
- Anglo-Saxon Rune Poem: "Wealth is a comfort to all; yet each man must give it freely if he wishes to win honour."
- Old Norwegian Rune Rhyme: "Wealth is a source of discord among kinsmen; the wolf lives in the forest."
- Old Icelandic Rune Poem: "Wealth is kinsmen's strife and the flood's beacon and the grave-fish's path."
Read the two Scandinavian lines and then think of the Shattering. The Elden Ring breaks, and Marika's own children, Godrick, Radahn, Morgott, Rykard, Mohg and Malenia, go to war over the pieces. Kinsmen's strife, over runes that are wealth. Nothing suggests FromSoftware had the rune poems in mind. But the oldest description of the first rune is a one-line summary of Elden Ring's plot.
The difference is the whole article. In the futhark, wealth is one letter in 24: Fehu also writes the f in any word at all. In Elden Ring, wealth is all a rune can mean. Spend it, level with it, lose it, but you can never spell anything with it.

The real runes, briefly
The Elder Futhark is the oldest runic alphabet: 24 letters used by Germanic peoples from roughly 150 to 800 CE, cut into wood, bone, metal and stone. Each letter has a sound, a name and a meaning. Fehu is cattle and wealth, Uruz the wild ox, Ansuz a god. The alphabet is named after its first six letters, f, u, th, a, r, k, just as "alphabet" is named after alpha and beta.
The magic grew on top of the writing. In Norse tradition, Odin wins the runes by hanging nine nights on the world-tree Yggdrasil, pierced by his own spear. From there the runes served as charms and protections, were combined into bindrunes and sigils, and were read for guidance in a practice that continues today. Real runes start as language and become powerful. Elden Ring's runes start as power and never become language.
Why the Lands Between has no room for real runes
The Lands Between is its own invention. Queen Marika, the Erdtree, the Greater Will, the Golden Order and the demigods are original, built by George R. R. Martin, who wrote the world's background, and Hidetaka Miyazaki, who wrote the game's story. The Erdtree is a giant golden tree at the centre of the world, and it is easy to see Yggdrasil in it, but the game never names Odin, the Eddas or the futhark.
In that world, a readable alphabet would have had nothing to do. Runes in the Lands Between hold up physics, decide who can die and pay for your next level. A letter can do none of those jobs, and FromSoftware was right not to force one in.
What gets lost is the other half of the real tradition: that runes were first a way of writing a name, a gift or a memorial, and only then a source of power.

Because it has not been restored yet. A Great Rune taken from a shardbearer is inert until you climb that rune's Divine Tower and touch the sigil at the top: Limgrave for Godrick's, Caelid for Radahn's, East Altus for Morgott's and Mohg's, West Altus for Rykard's, and the Isolated Divine Tower for Malenia's. Only then does a Rune Arc activate it.
How many Great Runes do you need to enter Leyndell?
Two. Finger Reader Enia at the Roundtable Hold tracks how many you hold, and the gate to Leyndell, Royal Capital, stays shut until you carry two. Which two does not matter.
