Ragnarok Online has been running since 31 August 2002, and sooner or later every Knight who reaches the third job, the Rune Knight, stands in Prontera with a bag of Rough Runestones and a list of names that look strangely familiar: Raido, Berkana, Isa, Thurisaz, Hagalaz.
No. The runes in Ragnarok Online are real rune names fixed to invented powers. Nothing on a runestone spells anything, and only one of the nine original stones does what its rune meant.
What makes Ragnarok worth its own answer is where those names came from. They are not spelled the way scholars spell the Elder Futhark. They are spelled the way a 1982 American divination book spelled it, and the ninth stone is that book's own invention: a rune with no letter on it. Ragnarok Online did not borrow from the Vikings. It borrowed from the bookshop.
What a rune is in Ragnarok Online
A rune is a consumable skill. The Rune Knight crafts a runestone, carries it, and uses it up to cast one specific skill, much like a magic scroll. The passive skill Rune Mastery (10 levels) unlocks the recipes one by one.
Crafting is a dice roll stacked on a shopping list:
- Double-click a Rough Runestone and pick the rune you want. The game takes the materials from your bag.
- Every recipe needs an Elder Branch, plus its own items: a Red Gemstone for Rhydo, Honey and Horrendous Hair for Urj, three Gold for Lux Anima.
- Roll for success. The base chance runs from 32% at level 1 to 50% at level 10. Better Rough Runestones add up to 60%, and harder runes subtract up to 20%.
A successful craft gives 2 stones at low levels and up to 6 at Rune Mastery level 10. Even using a rune is a gamble: in the rare case it fails, there is a 3% chance it explodes in your hand and a 1% chance it resurrects your whole party instead.
Which real runes does the Rune Knight carve?
Nine stones arrived with the class. The game's own data files give them odd spellings, and official iRO still sells them under those names. The English item list used by most private servers, the rAthena database, corrects them to real rune names.
| Official iRO name | English item name | Skill it casts | What the real rune meant |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turisus | Thurisaz Rune | Giant Growth: STR plus 30 | Giant |
| Hagalas | Hagalaz Rune | Skin of Stone: higher DEF and MDEF | Hail |
| Isia | Isa Rune | Vitality: healing received plus 50% | Ice |
| Urj | Uruz Rune | Abundance: 60 SP every 10 seconds | Aurochs, the wild ox |
| Rhydo | Raido Rune | Crushing Strike: one heavy blow | Riding |
| Nosiege | Nauthiz Rune | Refresh: cures 16 status effects | Need, constraint |
| Verkana | Berkana Rune | Millennium Shield: 2 to 4 magic shields | Birch |
| Asir | Othila Rune | Determination: ATK plus 70 | Inherited estate |
| Pertz | Wyrd Rune | Storm Blast: area damage | Not a letter at all |
A tenth stone, Lux Anima, was added later as the top S-rank rune. Its name is Latin for "light" and "soul". It has no Germanic root of any kind.
Why are the names spelled like a 1982 rune book?
Look at the English column again: Raido, Berkana, Othila, Nauthiz, Hagalaz. Two of them are not the forms you meet in runology, where the same letters appear as Berkano and Othala, next to Raido and Nauthiz. They are the exact spellings in Ralph Blum's The Book of Runes, the 1982 bestseller that turned the futhark into a fortune-telling kit, sold with a bag of stones.
Blum did one more thing. He added a 25th stone with nothing on it, the blank rune, and later rune sets took to calling it Wyrd. No blank rune exists in any carved inscription. The Elder Futhark had 24 letters, and a letter with no shape cannot write a sound.
So when the English item list names the ninth runestone the Wyrd Rune, it is quoting a 20th-century invention, not a Viking one. The source of the whole set shows through that one stone: Ragnarok's runes came from modern divination, passed through a Korean game's data files and back into English.
Two of the original spellings hint at the trail. Pertz echoes Perthro, a real rune whose old meaning nobody can pin down, which may be why a translator swapped it for "fate". And Asir echoes the Æsir, the Norse gods, the word behind Ansuz. The English list renamed it Othila anyway.
Do the rune powers match the real meanings?
Once. Turisus casts Giant Growth, and Thurisaz really is the giant rune: the Old Norwegian and Old Icelandic rune poems both open its stanza with the word thurs, giant. That match is either a well-read designer or a lucky guess, and it is the only one.
The rest do not line up:
- Isa means ice. The rune poems call it "the broad bridge" and "the bark of rivers". In the game it boosts healing. Meanwhile it is Nosiege, the need rune, that thaws you out: Refresh cures Frozen and Freezing.
- Raido means riding. The game makes it a single crushing blow, delivered by a class that does ride, on a dragon. Close, but the rune is about the journey, not the hit.
- Uruz, the wild ox the Anglo-Saxon poem calls "a very savage beast" that "fights with its horns", becomes a gentle 60 SP every 10 seconds.
- Berkana, the birch, becomes a stack of floating shields.
- Othila, an inherited estate, becomes a flat attack bonus.
This is the core difference. A real rune's meaning came from its name, and its name came from its sound: the letter for the th sound was called after a giant because the word started with that sound. Ragnarok keeps the names and throws away both the sound and the meaning, then fills the gap with stats.

The real runes, briefly
The Elder Futhark is the oldest runic alphabet: 24 letters used by Germanic peoples from roughly 150 to 800 CE, cut into wood, bone, metal and stone. Each letter is a sound, a name and a word at once. Fehu is cattle and wealth, Uruz the aurochs, Thurisaz the giant, and the name always starts with the letter's sound.
Magic came on top of the writing, not instead of it. In Norse tradition, Odin wins the runes by hanging nine nights on Yggdrasil. People combined letters into bindrunes and sigils to hold an intent, and in the 20th century writers such as Blum turned them into a system for readings. That last layer is modern, and it is the one Ragnarok picked up.
The closest relative in this series is Diablo II, which also names its runes and has you collect them, but puts them in order to make passwords. And if you want a crafting system built on recipes, Gothic 2 asks for sulphur where Ragnarok asks for an Elder Branch.
Why Rune-Midgarts has no room for real runes
Ragnarok Online adapts Lee Myung-jin's manhwa Ragnarok, and the Norse myth sits on the surface: Valkyries, Yggdrasil Berries and Leaves, a world named after the end of the gods. Underneath, the setting is its own. Players live in the Rune-Midgarts Kingdom, trade with the Republic of Schwartzvald and the Arunafeltz States, and fight in castle sieges. Nobody in Prontera writes anything in runes.
Given that, it makes sense that the runes became skills. A game with over 50 job classes needs buttons, not an alphabet. What it lost along the way is the part that made runes worth borrowing: a set of 24 signs that could write every word in a language, which no stack of buffs can do.
Want runes you can actually read?
Ragnarok Online gives you nine stones that each do one thing and are used up. The Elder Futhark gives you 24 that say things, and they have lasted for eighteen centuries.
The easiest way in is to draw one. You can cast a free rune reading in your browser right now, using the genuine Elder Futhark and their traditional meanings, with a quick single draw for a fast question or a fuller spread for something weightier. If you would rather learn slowly, pull a rune of the day each morning and meet the futhark one sign at a time, or read how online rune readings work first. The rest of the series is on the runes in games hub, including Valheim, the one game that uses the real futhark as a cipher, and Elden Ring, where runes are money.
Your Rune Knight already carries the right names. The letters behind them are still here, with no crafting roll and no chance of exploding. , free on iOS, Android, and the web, in English and Russian.
Frequently asked questions
Are the runes in Ragnarok Online real runes?
Partly. Eight of the Rune Knight's runestones carry the names of genuine Elder Futhark letters, among them Nauthiz, Raido, Berkana, Isa and Thurisaz. Their powers are invented, though. Nothing on a runestone spells a word, and the effects, from Giant Growth to Millennium Shield, are combat buffs designed by Gravity rather than anything the runes meant to the people who carved them.
How many runestones are there in Ragnarok Online?
Ten on official iRO today. Nine came with the Rune Knight: Rhydo, Turisus, Hagalas, Asir, Isia, Pertz, Nosiege, Urj and Verkana. A tenth, Lux Anima, sits at the top of the list as an S-rank stone. Each one triggers a single skill, so the set works like a book of scrolls rather than an alphabet of letters.
What does each Rune Knight rune do?
Turisus casts Giant Growth (STR plus 30), Isia casts Vitality (healing received plus 50%), Pertz casts Storm Blast, Hagalas casts Skin of Stone, Asir casts Determination (ATK plus 70), Urj casts Abundance (60 SP every 10 seconds), Rhydo casts Crushing Strike, Nosiege casts Refresh, and Verkana casts Millennium Shield. Lux Anima stacks several damage and HP bonuses at once.
How do you craft runes in Ragnarok Online?
With the Rune Mastery skill. Double-click a Rough Runestone, pick the rune, and the game takes the materials from your bag: always an Elder Branch, plus items such as a Red Gemstone for Rhydo or Honey and Horrendous Hair for Urj. One craft yields 2 stones at low skill levels and up to 6 at Rune Mastery level 10.
What is the success rate for crafting runes?
The base rate runs from 32% at Rune Mastery level 1 to 50% at level 10. DEX, LUK and job level add a little, and the runestone grade adds more: plus 4% for General, plus 15% for Rare and plus 60% for Mystic. Harder runes subtract up to 20%, with Verkana and Lux Anima the hardest to make.
Why are the runes spelled Nosiege, Rhydo and Verkana?
Those are the game's own spellings. The item data files call the stones Runstone_Nosiege, Runstone_Rhydo, Runstone_Verkana and so on, and official iRO kept those names. The English item list used by most private servers corrects them to Nauthiz, Raido and Berkana, which are the spellings made popular by Ralph Blum's 1982 divination book.
What is the Wyrd rune in Ragnarok Online?
It is the English name some item lists give the Pertz runestone, which casts Storm Blast. Wyrd is not an Elder Futhark letter. It is the blank stone that modern divination sets added in the 1980s, after Ralph Blum included one in The Book of Runes. Pertz itself echoes Perthro, a real rune whose old meaning is uncertain.
Is Thurisaz really the rune of giants?
Yes, and it is the one place the game lines up with history. The Old Norwegian and Old Icelandic rune poems both open the Thurisaz stanza with the word giant, from Old Norse thurs. Ragnarok Online gives the Turisus stone the skill Giant Growth. Every other runestone's power has no link to its rune's traditional meaning.
What is Lux Anima in Ragnarok Online?
The highest-rank runestone, crafted from three Light Granules and three Gold. On iRO it adds 30% to physical, critical, melee and ranged damage, raises maximum HP and SP by 30%, and gives auto attacks a 15% chance to cast Storm Blast. Its name is Latin for light and soul. It is not a rune and has no Germanic root at all.
What happens when a rune fails in Ragnarok Online?
Usually nothing. Activation succeeds about 98 to 100% of the time, and 80% of failures have no visible effect. The rest are a lottery: a 10% chance of a status effect on yourself, 3% that the rune explodes for magic damage, 2% that you teleport, and a 1% chance that a failed rune resurrects every dead member of your party.
Is Ragnarok Online based on Norse mythology?
Loosely. The game, released by Gravity in South Korea on 31 August 2002, adapts Lee Myung-jin's manhwa Ragnarok, which borrows from the myths of Ragnarok, the end of the Norse world. Players meet Valkyries, Yggdrasil Berries and Yggdrasil Leaves, but they live in invented countries such as the Rune-Midgarts Kingdom and the Republic of Schwartzvald.
Can you write words with Ragnarok Online runes?
No. Each runestone is a consumable that triggers one skill, and nothing in the game combines them into words. The real Elder Futhark works the other way round: its 24 letters each stand for a sound, so any word in a Germanic language can be spelled with them. Valheim is the rare game that uses runes as a real cipher.
Which real runes are missing from Ragnarok Online?
Most of them. The game uses eight genuine names, Nauthiz, Raido, Berkana, Isa, Othila, Uruz, Thurisaz and Hagalaz, so sixteen of the 24 Elder Futhark letters never appear, including Fehu, Ansuz, Kenaz, Gebo, Wunjo, Algiz, Sowilo, Tiwaz and Dagaz. Even the ones it uses are spelled the way a modern divination book spelled them.
Where can I try a real rune reading online?
You can cast a free rune reading in your browser with the Way of the Runes rune-reading tool. It uses the genuine 24 Elder Futhark runes and their traditional meanings, with quick single draws for a fast question and fuller spreads for something weightier, and a full description for every rune.
